' Applicationf'filedn 1, To alt 'ivhom it may conccriur Be it known that "I, JOHN J. OB'RIEN, a citizen of the United (States, and' 'resident of the city of New York, borough of'Brooklyn, in: the
Check-Protector, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.-
. My invention relates-to a check protector, and aims. to providenew and useful'iimprovements in connection with. a device of this character.
It is a well appreciated fact that any number of devices have been placed upon the market by means of which the, body of a check or similar: instrument 'might be marked to preclude any dangerv of its amount being raised or the written matter upon the same being otherwise altered.v
These devices have further ofiered objections in that primarily they could not be placed upon the market at a nominal figure, and secondly that the mechanism necessary presented .such a cumbersome aggregate as to make it impossible for a person to carry the same,
With these objects in mind my present invention aims to provide a check protector which will primarily be of such a simple construction as to permit of its being placed upon the market at a nominal figure. V
A further object of my invention is the construction of a device of the character stated which shall be extremely light and compact so that it may at all times be carried in the pocket, and so as to be instantly available upon a check or similar paper being written.
With these and other objects in mind reference is had to the attached sheet of drawings which latter illustrate practical embodi ments of the same and in which;
Figure 1 is a side view'of my protector and showing the same in association with a fountain pen., I
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary enlarged sectional view thereof, and
Fig. 3 is aside view of a protector embodying my construction.
It will be seen in Figs. 1 and 2 that the reference numeral 5 indicates the cap portion of a fountain pen or other writing implement, while the reference numeral 6 in 3 indicates the handle of any desired construction or material, my improved check protector hereinafter described being applied Specification of Letters Patent.
county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new'and Improved ed preferably being in line with a the ca face of Writing 1921, Serial No. 474,193. I
. Patented Aug, 30, 192i.
TE T;PA ENT OFFICE R to these members, it being understood that i these elements form no part of my.i11vention and that the protector is capable "of association withany desired base which may constitute any convenient part of an implement. i I
' Referring now more particularly to Fig. l
2 it will be seen that the reference numeral 7 indicates a cap which constitutes'a'housing for the protector, this cap being slidably retained in this mounting by utilizing a pin 8 secured to .thismounting which extends through the slot 9 forming a part of the cap 7 it being also noted in this connection that the cap 7 is normally retained projectby means of a spring 10 interposed between the end of the base and the inner end of the cap 7. o
Further it will be seen that a pair of lugs 11 form continuations of the base portion, and are inolosed within the cap 7, and between these lugs a toothed wheel 12 is rotatably mounted, the outer edge of the wheel slot 13 formed in the apex of the cap 7. p i
Thus reference being had to Fig. 1 it will be seen, assuming that a check has been written and that the writing on the same is to be protected against alteration, an operator may reverse the pen utilized so that p 7 is pressed into intimate engagement with the surface of the check 14. Upon this occurring the cap 7 will be pressed inwardly against the tension exerted l0, and the teeth of the wheel 12 will extend through a slot 13 and beyond the cap 7 so that the same bear against the surface of the carrying the cap 7 being slid across the sura series of indentations or perforations willbe formed, obviously precluding the alteration of the writing there on due to the fact that any erasure ofthis writing would immediately become apparent. Reference being had to F ig; 3 it will be noted that the'operation and construction of the parts is identical with that disclosed in Figs. 1 and 2 with the exception that a different form ofmounting is utilized, but it will be appreciated that any desired member may constitute the mounting for the cap 7 and that my invention resides in the protector proper, the parts of the latter being obviously desirable to alteration without in the least departing from the scope of my claims, which are:
check 14 whereby upon the entire mounting I 1. A protector including a means present:
and projectable beyond the same for per mitting of the forming of indentations upon a piece of paper.
2. A check arotector including means-providing a cap dlidably secured to said mounting, said cap being formed with a slot in its apex, and a toothed wheel rotatably secured to said mounting and in line with the slot in said cap.
3. A check protector including means providing a cap slidably secured to said mounting, said caprbeing formed with a slot in its apex and means for normally projecting said cap, a toothed wheel rotatably secured to said mounting, and in line with the slot in said cap.
4. A check protector including means providing a mounting, a cap formed with a slot, a pm secured to said mountlng and exlng a mounting, a cap slidably secured to said mounting and means within said cap' tending through said slot, a spring interposed 'hetween the end of said mounting and the inner face 'of'said cap for normally projeoting the latter, said cap being formed with a slot in its apex portion, and a toothed wheel rotatably secured to said mounting and in line with the slot insaid cap.
5. A check protector including means pro viding a mounting, a cap formed with a slot," a pin secured to said mounting andextending through said slot, a spring interposed'gl:
