Be it known that WAI/ren M. Dwrnn, a citizen of the United States, residin at Hillsdale, in the county of Bergen and tate of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Check-Protectors, of which the following-is a description, Asuch as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. This invention relates to check protectors and the objects of the invention are to provide a check rotector that is simple in condp operation, as well as cheap of manufacture, the same being easily carried in the pocket like a pencil or fountain pen and of the same general appearance.

In the drawings 1 designates a handle or body portion of a check protector which comprises in the present instance a hollow cylindrical tube-of relatively thin metal preferf ably made of ap roxirnately the diameter and size of an or 'nary lead pencil or fountain en so that the same can readily be carried 1n the pocket.
The lower end of the body portion 1 is suitably cut and 'formed to provide suitable integral standards 2 which support the ends of a bearing pin 3 on which is rotatably mounted a knurled wheel 4. v
The diameter of the knurled wheel 4 is preferabl a little less than the outside diameter of t e body portion 1 to permit of a suitable tubular cap 5 being fitted to slip over the end of the body portion 1 to cover the knurled wheel 4 when'not in use. lIn order to retain the cap 5 in position the same is preferably provided adjacent its open end with an internal circular groove Gfpressed therein which is arranged to enge a similar external circular ridge 7 pressed in the body portion 1 as clearly shown in Fig. 1. The other end of the body portion l is also preferably provided wlth a clrcular ridge 9 pressed therein to engage the cap 5 'when the samelis not in use.
The interior of the body portion 1 adjacent the knurled wheel 4 is arranged to contain a cylindrical inking pad 10 the lower end of which is arranged to engage the knurled Wheel 4. 'lhe interior of the body portion 1 is also arranged to contain a coiled spring 11 which acts to force the inking pad 10 into engagement with the knurled wheel 4. The upper end of' the coiled spring l1 is arranged to be held in position by means of a suitable screw threaded plug 12 which closes the top of the body portion 1. The lower end of the coiled spring 11 is preferably arranged to be secured to the upper end of the inking pad so that when the plug 12 is removed the spring and inking pad can easily be removed.
.The body portlon is preferably provided near-its upper end with a suitable spring clip 13 which is adapted to engage the edge of the pocket of the wearer when the check protector is not in use. j
The check protector above described can be used on the face of checks to prevent alteration, the inked surface of the knurled Wheel acting to make inked indentations that cannot be removed or erased.
The check protector above described is simple -in construction and operation, the same has few parts and is cheap of manufacture, the same being easily carried in the pocket like a pencil or fountain pen and of the same general appearance.
While the same has been described with particular reference to the details of construction the same is not to be considered as limited thereto as many changes can be made and still fall within the scope of the invention set forth in the followmg claim.
