FOUNTAIN PEN. APPLICATION FILED FEB. I5, 1921.

FOUNTAIN PEN.
aiaeeo.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 18, 1922.
Application filed. February 15, 1921. Serial No. 445360 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH B. FRIEDMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Fountain Pen, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in fountain pens wherein a portion of the ink reservoir is rendered visible to indicate th amount of ink supply therein.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a new and improved fountain pen having means for rendering visible the amount of ink supply within said en. p A further object of the invention is to provide self-filling pens with means for rendering visible the ink supply within said pen.
A still further object of the present invention is to provide new and improved means for rendering visible the ink supply within said pen.
I accomplish these several objects by means of the device disclosed in the drawings forming a part of the present specification wherein like characters of reference are used to designate similar parts throughout the said specification and drawings, and in which Fig. 1 is an elevation of a fountain pen, partly in section, disclosing the preferred form of the invention, as applied to a fountain pen of the self-filling type;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged broken sectional view disclosing the construction and arrangement of the parts in the type of pen disclosed in Fig. l of the drawings; and
Figs. 3 and at are enlarged broken sectional views disclosing still further modifications of the invention.
Fig. 5 is a further modified form of the invention.
Referring to the drawings the numeral 1 is used to designate in general the barrel of a fountain pen of the self-filling type having a transparent cap 2 screwed or otherwise suitably connected to the end thereof.
A collapsible reservoir 3 is mounted with in the barrel 1 in the usual manner and is provided with a transparent portion 4 which extends into the cap 2 of the barrel 1 so that a portion of said reservoir 3 is rendered visible whereby the quantity or amount of the ink supply within said reservoir 3 may be determined.
By holding the pen 1 with the cap 2 lowermost any ink remaining within the reservoir 3 will be visible and when no ink is contained therein the reservoir cap 4 will appear transparent, thus indicating the absence of ink within said reservoir 3.
The transparent cap 4. of the reservoir 3 may be mounted within a separate transparent cap 2 on the end of. the barrel 1, as disclosed in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings; or said caps 2 and 4 may be combined in a single transparent cap 7 which is attached to both the reservoir 3 and barrel 1 as disclosed in Fig. 3, or an opaque cap 8, having openings or slots 9, through which the transparent reservoir cap 4 may be rendered visible, may be employed as disclosed in Fig. 4 of the drawings.
Fig. 5 is a further modification of a simple form of the invention as applied to a fountain pen of the self-filling type and is similar in construction to the form disclosed in Fig. 1 with the exception that a slot 14 is provided in the lower end of the barrel in place of the transparent cap 2 through which slot the ink supply may be rendered visible.
It is obvious that any one of the forms of the invention disclosed will readily indicate the amount of ink supply contained within the fountain pen by the simple expedient of holding the pen vertically to permit any ink contained to flow to the bottom or transparent portions of the pen.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a fountain pen having a barrel portion, of a collapsible ink reservoir within said barrel; a transparent member connected to said reservoir and forming a part thereof to render visible the interior of said reservoir; and a tip formed upon the barrel portion adjacent the transparent member arranged to permit observation of the ink supply within the reservoir.
2. The combination with a fountain pen of a collapsible ink reservoir therein, having a portion of said reservoir transparent to render visible a portion of the ink in said reservoir.
3. The combination with a fountain pen of a collapsible ink reservoir therein; a transparent member connected to said reservoir to render visible the interior of said reservoir; and a ca mounted upon said pen and adjacent the visible portion of said reservoir andvarranged to expose to view said upon the pen and adjacent said visible porvisible portion whereby the amount of ink tion to expose to view said visible portion 10 therein may be determined. whereby the amount of the ink supply in 4. The combination with a fountain pen said reservoir may be determined.
of a collapsible ink reservoir therein; a In witness whereof I have hereunto set my transparent member connected to said resersignature.
voir to render visible the interior of said reservoir; and atransparent cap mounted JOSEPH B. FRIEDMAN.
