To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ULRICH KORNSTEIN, a

citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have 1nvented certain new and useful Improvements in F ountain-Pens, of which the following is a specification. Y

The present invention relates to self-filling fountain pens, and more particularlyjto that type which is equipped with compressible sacks of soft rubber or similar material, which sacks are adaptedto store the ink and to fill themselves by suction after they have been suitably compressed.-

1 The main object of the invention is to provide a simple and effective means for distributing the compressing action substantially throughout the entire length of the ink-sack, so as to effectively expel from the latter air when it is to be filled with ink.

Another object of the invention is to provide the fountain pen with means for rendering the level of theink in the sack visible when the same drops below a normal point, thereby indicating the necessity of-refilling the pen.

A further object of the invention is to combine the sack compressing means with the ink level indicating means, so as to re duce the cost of production of the pen.

A still further object of the invention is to produce a fountain pen of the character described which can be manufactured on a commercial scale, or in other words, one which is not so difficult to make as to be beyond a reasonable cost of such a contrivance.

lVith these and other objects in view, which will more fully appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the combination, arrangement, and construction of parts hereinafter described, pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it being understood that many changes may be made in the size and proportion of the several parts and details of construction within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

One of the many possible embodiments of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which:--

- In the drawings, the numeral 10 indicates the barrel of a fountain pen, provided at one end with a holder 1l,carrying a pen 12.

To the inner end of the pen holder is fitted .or otherwise connected with the material of the bag to present a liquid-tight receptacle. The inner end-ofthepen holder 11 is'reduced in diameter, as clearly shown at 16,

and over this reduced end is drawn a protecting sleeve 17 of metal or other suitable material, said sleeve inclosing the sack 13. as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings The sleeve is provided near its outer end wlth an opening 18, preferably oblong, through which opening is accessible the strip 15 above referred to. With the opening 18 is adapted to register a preferably oblong opening 19 in the barrel 10, the said barrel being adapted to be rotated upon the pen holder iii-relation to the sleeve 17 A cap 20 is provided for protecting, when the pen is not in use, its pen point, the cap being placed upon the closed end of the barrel when it is intended to use the pen in the well-known manner.

The operation of the device is as follows When it is intended to refill the pen, the barrel 10 is shifted upon the pen holder 11 until its opening 19 is brought into alinement with the opening 18 in the protecting sleeve 17 (Figs. 1, 2 and 3). In this manner access can be had to the sack collapsing strip 15. By inserting now a finger into the registering openings 19 and 18 and forcing the sack collapsing strip 15 toward the opposite portion of the barrel, the said ink-sack is collapsed substantially throughout its entire length, whereby air is expelled therefrom.

4) In this manner the sleeve 17 protects the ink-sack against being compressed.

If it is intended to ascertain the level of the ink in the inlosack, the diaphanous sack collapsing'strip is exposed to View in the manner above described and the pen held with its closed end downward. If the level of the ink in the sack then appears through the said strip within the opening 19 in the barrel, the pen should be refilled.

i/Vhat I claim is:

1. A fountain pen, comprising a pen holding section, a barrel rotatably mounted thereon and provided with an opening near one of its ends, a compressible ink-sack attached to said pen holding section and dis osed within said barrel, a diaphanous sac -001- 7 Copies of this patent may be obtained for V 2. A fountain pen, comprising a pen holding section, a barrel rotatably mounted thereon and provided with an opening near one of-its ends, a compressible ink-sack attached to said pen holding section and disposed Within said barrel, a diaphanous rigidsackcollapsing strip forming part of said sack and extending substantially throughout the length thereof, and a sleeve secured to said pen holding section and interposed between said sack and said barrel, said sleeve being provided with an opening in alinementlwithsaid collapsing strip and adapted to register with the opening in said barrel.

3.- A fountain pen, comprising a pen holding section, a barrel rotatably mounted there- 011 andprovidedwith an opening near one of its ends, a compressible ink-sack attached to said pen holding section: and disposed within said'barrel, said sack being provided with a slot extending substantially throughout its length, a diaphanous sack collapsing strip covering said slot'to produce a liquidtight receptacle, and a sleeve secured to said pen holding section and interposed between said sack and said barrel, said sleeve being provided with an opening in alinement with said collapsing strip and adapted to register with the opening in said barrel.
