Description

T. A. DICKINSON.
SELF FILLING FOUNTAIN PEN.
APPLICATION FILED DEGl 22. i919.
. Patented July 13, 11920.

' SELF-FILLING FOUNTAIN-PEN.
isaaisa,
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS A; DICKIN- soN, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Youngstown, in the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful @elf-Filling Fountain-Pen, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in fountain pens and has more especialireference to a self-filling fountain .penformed of transparent material in order that the user may see the amount of ink containedin the en. v l i The objects of the invention are to provide a pen of transparent material through which the ink contained within the barrel of the pen will always be visible; to provide a selffilling fountain pen containing aminimum ynumber of parts; and to provideva fountain pen of this character which is simple and inexpensive to manufacture and efficient in use and arranged to use up the last drop of ink contained within the barrel thereof.
With these objects in view the invention consists4 in the novel construction and ar*- rangement of parts, hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings,
and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportions, size and minor details of construction may be made within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit or sacriicing any of the advantages of the invention.
The invention thus set `forth in general terms is illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, in whichV Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view through a pen employing the invention showing the same ready for use.
Fig. 2 is a similar View showing the operation thereof for filling, and
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the end portion of the barrel.
A practical embodiment of the invention is disclosed in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification in which similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The barrel 1 of the pen is preferably formed of a suitable transparent vmaterialand although the barrel is illustrated in the drawings as made of one piece it will be understood that this barrel may be made of one or two pieces in order to form it of specification of Letters Patent.

different materials. The lower or writing end of the barrel is reduced and provided with the usual neck portion 2 having mounted therein the protruding nozzle 3 which carries the pen point 4 slotted at 5 in the usual manner. Y f
Attention is directed to the channel 6 in the nozzle. This channel extending through vthe longitudinal center of the nozzle instead vof being ,located directly beneath the pen in 6 extends downwardly to the hole 7 in the Y pen point ink may be drawn into the ink chamber of thepen from a lower level than is possible with the ordinary type of self filling fountain pens. v y
The rear or upper end of the penis pro vided with the endwall 9 having the conical valve seat 10 therein, a reduced externally threaded neck 11 protruding beyond said end wall. This neck is provided with longitudinal grooves 12 extending from the usual end thereof to a point near the lower or inner end of the threads and a cap 13 is threadedv upon the neck and arranged to normally fit snugly against the rear end of the barrel portion of the pen, thus closing the grooves 12.
A rubber Vdisk 14 is cemented or otherwise securely attached to the inner face of the cap and cemented or otherwise connected within the cap is the stopper 15 provided with a conical valve 16 arranged to normally close the upper or rear end of the ink chamber by seating within the valve seat 10.
The barrel of the pen is provided near its upper or rear end with a rubber washer 17 which is cemented or otherwise secured within the annular groove 18 in the barrel portion of thepen. The usual cap 19 is provided for the pen and provided with the internal screw threads 20 arranged to engage the threads 21 upon the lower end of the barrel in order to protect the pen point when not in use.
This cap is arranged to fit loosely over the rear end of the barrel of the pen as shown in Fig. 1, the washer 17 engaging the rality of annular grooves 23v is formed around the'interior ofthe lneck portion 1l.
These Grooves are Jrovid'ed as an additionalv Y on q u n precaution to prevent any ink which might creep around the valve- 16' from passing through thegrooves 'l2 andthrou'gh the' aperture 22 and'upon the operators fingers when the pen is being-filled. l
" The operation of the device is vas follows:
- When it is desired to ll the penthe inner cap 13y is' unscrewed'suiiicient toV uncover the grooves v12 formed -in the neckV portion Y11 of the pen at the Sametime unseating the valve 16 from its seatl '10Q The chamber or interiorofffthe barrel of the'pen is thus opened tothe outer atmosphere through the Y valve'land` grooves l2.' v
lThe cap =19is then' placed upon the end of the barrel in the position shown in Fig. l and is grasped Vby the operator, one finger being 'covered over the aperture 22. The nozzle-8 isthenjinserted into theljottle ori other receptacle from which thei-nlc istobewithdrawn and the cap 19'is withdrawnfrom' the end of the barrel sucking the inkup :through'the nozzle ,and intol thebarrel ofthe pen.
The cap 18 is then screw-ed down into place closing' the valve lfand the pen is ready for use. When writinglwith the pen the caplS maybe lpartially unscrewed to allow `atmospheric air .to entery the upper end of the inlr chambercausing a freer flow of link at the pen point. All of the parts of the pen are made of transparent material with the, possible exception of the gold pen n point, the yrubber washer 17v and the `rubber kcushion or disk JA.'
Although the ldrawings and above specification disclose the best mode in which I have contemplated embodying my invention I desire to be not limited tothe details of such disclosure, for, in the further practi-A cal" application, of my invention, many lchanges in form and construction may be made, as'v circumstances Vrequire or experience suggests, without departing from the spiritk of the invention, withinthe scope of theappended claim. l
I claim: Y
A selffilling fountain pen comprising-"a barrel portion having an aperture in its rear e endf andl threaded reduced neclrextending beyond its rear end, said neck being pro- Y vided with longitudinal grooves in its outer surface,a screw threaded cap'fitting upon saidl neck and normally yclosing, said grooves, the interior of said/neck beingxprovided with a-nnula'r-1 grooves, a valve carried byV said cap and arranged to close, the aperture in fthe end of the barrel, a resilient peripheral `washer located around the barrel Vand. an
elongated cap arranged to slide over theirear end ofthe barrel andvtightly fitting. upon said-washer.l -V i In testimony that I claimfhe above,.I have `hereunto subscribed my name.
