FOUNTAIN PEN.

To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK J. OROURKE, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the town of Whitestone, county of Queens, State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fountain Pens, of which the following is the speciication.
The device, the subject of my invention is what may be termed a self-filling fountain pen and is of the class wherein the ink reservoir is at least in part formed of a collapsible elastic member.
The particular objects of my invention are to make it possible to readily change the elastic member when it shall become unfitted for use, to so operate it that the ink capacity of the pen is increased or at least up to approximately the capacity of the ordinary open barrel, dropper filled pen. l
Another object of the invention is to increase the inward flow of ink to the reservoir, without increasing the outward flow or opening the passage toan extent that the pen would flood or leak.
Another object of the invention is to make the exterior of the pen body uniform, thus increasing the attractiveness and overcoming the objectionof an enlarged cap covering the operative end of the pen, which cap adds to the weight and causes the pen to more readily drop out of the pocket.
Other objects of my invention and the means for accomplishing them, together with the complete and' detailedV description of the construction will be set forth as the specification advances and the accompanying drawing should be referred to for a complete understanding of the specification which follows:

The body of mypen and which is indicated at 10 is comparatively short and may be a barrel, or cylindrical, or tubular member of any desired size or diameter.
Formed integral or secured to this body member l() is a ring or flange 11 and screw threaded to the body member 10 is a pen nib holding portion 12, supporting a pen nib 13. l
The feeding mechanism, the pen nib, the member 12 and" the interior of the body member 11 may be designed, constructed or arranged as desired. Upon the exterior of the body member 10 and adjacent the nib holding portion 12, I arrange screw threads 14; for the reception of a protective cap 15 and which may be provided with a clip 16. It will be noted that the exterior of the cap 15 is of approximately equal diameter with the ring or flange 11.
The other, or inner end of the member 10 is also provided with screw threadsas shown at 17, adapted to receive a cap 18 and of approximately equal diameter to the cap 15, but of greater length and as shown in Fig. 2, certain portions of the caps 15 and 18 may be tapered so that the cap 15 may be temporarily engaged upon the cap 18 to retain the whole device associated, even. when the pen is in'use.
Formed integral with the body member 10 and adjacent the screw threads 17 is a reduced portion 19 having a flange 20 and provided with a plurality of perforations as shown at 21, 22 and 23. The rubber sae or compressible resilient member 24 is provided with a thick securing flange 25, which is adapted to be engaged in the flange 20, to secure the sac 24 in operable position.
Arranged upon the end of the portion 19 and over the perforations therein is a valve member 26 having a centrally disposed perforation 26 adapted to register with the perforation 22 in the member 19 and formed in the valve 26 are llappers or tongues 27 and 28 adapted to lay over and to open or close passages through the perforations 21 and 23 in the member 19, opening inward during the suction of the sac 24 and closing during the normal flow of ink in feeding the pen.
'Ihe operation of this pen is similar to that of the ordinary pen, except that in filling, the cap 18 is removed, the sac compressed and the ink allowed to flow or be drawn inward until the body member 10 and the sac 24 are filled, whereupon the cap is returned and the pen is ready for use.
When the sac 24, becomes worn, punctured, or hardened, so as lno longer to operate efficiently, it may be removed and a new sac placed in position without the necessity of returning the pen to the manufac turer.
I have found that mechanically operated pens are desirable to some people. To make my device a mechanically operated self-filling pen, I would provide tongues or fingers 29 and 30 as shown in Fig. 6, arranging one at each side of the sac 24. I would then provide a button 31 having a wire 32 attached thereto, terminating in the ring 33, surrounding the fingers 29 and 30. l/Vhen drawn the button 31 will cause the ring 33 to press the resilient fingers 29 and 30 to Ward each other, squeezing or compressing the sac 24 and the inward movement of the 'button would allow the sac to again expand where the ring 35 is provided with a button 36, operating in the slot 37 in the cap 38. The operation of this device is similar to the operation of the device shown in Fig. 6 and while modifications may be made within the scope of the appended claims, I prefer the Whole as herein described.
Having'carefully and fully described my invention, what I claim is 1. A. fountain pen, comprising a body portion, a projection therefrom of reduced diameter and provided with a plurality of perforations, a resilient compressible member upon said projection and a valve member Within said resilient member and arranged over said perforations and retained by said resilient member.
2. A fountain pen having a body member, an enlarged flange thereon, a plurality of caps screw threaded to said body and at opposite ends thereof, said caps being of equal diameter and of a diameter equal to the diameter of said flange, one of said caps being of a length greater than the other, said body member being provided with a reduced portion and within one said cap, a resilient member thereon and a valve member upon said reduced'portion and within said resilient member, as herein set forth. r
