New York, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fountain-Pens,- of which the following'is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing s.

It has been found that, when the ink is allowed to flow into the font or reservoir of a 3 been constructed, the air in the reservoir is fountain-pen, as the same has heretofore liable to be caught beneath the ink; and, upon escaping, the entrapped air will carry with it some of the ink, so that the ink appears to s uirt out of the reservoir or barrel and is lia le to soil the fingers of the one who is fillingthe barrel vith ink.

In the drawings illustrating the principle of this invention and'the best mode now known to me of applying that principle, Figure 1 'is an elevation of a fountain-pen 'embod ing this invention; Fig. 2 is a longitudina section through the reservoir or barrel of the fountain-pen, the section being taken on the line II.II-of Fig. 3; and Fig. 3 isa section on the line III-JII of Fig. 1..

A fountain-pen barrel having a lengthwise-extending slotted partition which dividesthe barrel into two-parts which are in communication with each other at the permanentlyclosed end of the barrel and form the legs of a U-tube; the ink in filling the barrel flowing down one leg and up the otherleg of the U-tube, thereby pernutting the free escape of air from the barrel.
