FOUNTAIN PEN.
APPLICATION FILED AHLZI, ms.
Patented July 6, 1915.
[NYE/ TOR BY W ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT oFFIoE:
I WILLIAM L. DURAND, or NEw'Yonx, N. Y.
FOUNTAIN -I'EN'.
New York, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fountain-Pens,- of which the following'is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing s.
his invention relates to mgn'ovemeuts 1n fountain-pens; and an ObJECi; of this invention is to provide a fountain-pen with means i for preventing, durin the filling of tho reservoir or barrel of t e pen, the squirting out of the ink due to the sudden escape or outflow of the air entrapped beneath the 111k.
It has been found that, when the ink is allowed to flow into the font or reservoir of a 3 been constructed, the air in the reservoir is fountain-pen, as the same has heretofore liable to be caught beneath the ink; and, upon escaping, the entrapped air will carry with it some of the ink, so that the ink appears to s uirt out of the reservoir or barrel and is lia le to soil the fingers of the one who is fillingthe barrel vith ink.
In the drawings illustrating the principle of this invention and'the best mode now known to me of applying that principle, Figure 1 'is an elevation of a fountain-pen 'embod ing this invention; Fig. 2 is a longitudina section through the reservoir or barrel of the fountain-pen, the section being taken on the line II.II-of Fig. 3; and Fig. 3 isa section on the line III-JII of Fig. 1..
The lgservoir, barrel or font a of the pen is formed at one end with interior screwthreads 6 and into this end there is screwed the nozzle .or plug a which carries the nib 'd.
The inside. of the barrel a is formed with a pair of diametrically-o posite lengthwiseextending grooves e; an mto these grooves, there is slippeda partition wall f which divides the interior space of the barrel into two parts 1, it. However, the grooves e do not extend as far as the closed end i of the barrelbut stop short thereof, therebyleaving i aspace j at'that end of the wall f. ing down one arm will rise in the other arm,
thereby forcing the air outwardly. This construction prevents the accumulation or entrapping of air underneath the ink and the soiling of the. fingers which results from such entrapped airs escaping suddenly from thle barrel and carrying with it a part of the in To provide for the escape of the air, when the barrel is partly filled, I form the partition 7' with slots k; hence, when the ink is dropped into one leg (or arm) of the partly filled U-tube, the air will flow from one leg (or arm) to the other leg (or. arm) thereof and escape, while the ink will flow, as before, down one leg (or arm) and up the other.
Iclaim:
1. A fountain-pen barrel having a lengthwise-extend'ng partition which divides the barrel into wo parts which are in communication witlgl eac other at the permanentlyclosed end j'of the'barrel and form the legs of a U-tube; the ink in filling the barrel flowing down one leg and up-the o'thcr logaof the U-tube, thereby permitting the free-escape of air from the barrel.
2. A fountain-pen barrel having a lengthwise-extending slotted partition which dividesthe barrel into two-parts which are in communication with each other at the permanentlyclosed end of the barrel and form the legs of a U-tube; the ink in filling the barrel flowing down one leg and up the otherleg of the U-tube, thereby pernutting the free escape of air from the barrel.
