SUSPENDERS.
Application led March 17, 1921.
T0 all whom t may con-cem Be it known that I, VIRGIL REA STRADER, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Philippi, county of Barbour, and State of West Virginia, have invented Certain new and useful Improvements in Suspenders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates broadly to garment supporters, and more specifically to an end structure for Suspenders.
The main object of the invention is to simplify and structurally improve the suspender-end structure disclosed in my prior Patent N o. 1,356,944, granted to me October 26, 1920.
The structure shown in the patent mentioned includes a looped cord having its ends projected through eyes provided therefor in a spring-overlying yoke, and clamps attached to said ends and disposed in seated relation to said yoke. An objectionable feature of said structure resides in the employment .of the clamps, due to the fact that they become detached more or less readily by strains imposed thereon through pulls on the cord.
The chief aim of the present invention is to obviate the objection referred to by the provision of a suspended end in' which both the yoke and clamps of my said prior structure are dispensed with.
With this and other objects in view, the invention resides in the features of construction and arrangement of parts which will hereinafter be fully described, reference Y being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a suspender end constructed in accordance with my invention, and- T Fig. 2 is an enlarged section on line 2 2,
iig. l.
Referring to said drawings, 1 indicates a pocket formed by doubling the end portion of a suspender strap 2 of inelastic webbing back upon itself and stitching the same along its lateral edges and across its end to the underlying strap.
Seated at the bottom of the pocket is the lower end of a spring 3 formed of a narrow strip of resilient steel bent into zigzag shape and having its upper end located adjacent to the upper end of said pocket.
Looped over the top end of said spring is Specification lof Letters Patent.
turned back upon spring are firmly Patented Auges, 1921. Serial No. 452,926.l
an intermediate portion of a cord 4 which extends thence downward on opposite lateral sides of said spring and outward through eyes 5 provided therefor in the bottom of said pocket.
The longer of the end portions of the cord projecting outward through said eyes 5 yis itself to form a lower terminal loop or button-receiving portion 4, and the two ends of the cord are brought together, or into meeting relation, within the embrace of a metal clamp 6 which is disposed in rigidly binding or clamping relation to the two substantially parallel mempers of the cord above said button-receiving oop.
The topmost lap 3a of the spring 3 is horizontally disposed and is preferably slightly concave-convex in cross section to afford a seat for the overlying portion of the cord. the latter being firmly attached to said lap 3a by means of a clam The spring 3 yields readily to compres sion strains imposed thereon through pulls applied to the cord 4, thus permitting relative downward movement of the latter with reslpect to the inelastic strap 2. Y s is obvious, the construction described is equally adapted to be embodied in suspenders and garment supporters of the different types or forms conmionly employed by men, women and children.
`What is claimed is- 1. A suspender comprising an inelastic webbing doubled upon itself to form a pocket, a zigzag spring disposed within said pocket and having its lower end seated upon the bottom of the latter, a cord having an intermediate portion thereof supported upon the upper end of said spring, said cord having the opposite members thereof located laterally of said spring and projected outwardly through the bottom of said pocket, a clamp whereby said intermediate portion of the cord and the supporting portion of the attached together, and means uniting the opposite ends of said cord outside said pocket and forming a terminal loop.
2. A suspender comprising an inelastic webbing doubled upon itself to form a pocket, a zigzag spring disposed within said pocket and having its lower end seated upon the bottom of the latter, the topmost lap of said spring being disposed horizontally, a
cord having'an intermediate portion thereof forming means for attaching said cord to a seated upon said topmost lap and extending garment. lo thence downwardly between the sides of said In testimony whereof, I affix my signature spring and the lateral edge portions of said in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
