To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ARTHUR H. BARNETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Knives, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to that class of knives, known as butcher knives, carving knives, paring knives, etc. I

The object of my invention is to provide a knife for general use, wherein the cutting edge may be quickly removed or replaced by another at a small cost. A. further object of the invention is to provide an extremely thin cutting edge which may be sharpened on a steel without the necessity of grinding. Another object of my invention is to provide a knife with a removable cutting edge that is sanitary and in which the blade will not rust in place.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Fig:- ure I is a side view of one shape of a knife embodying my invention, with the cutting edge in place on the holder. Fig. II is a side view of the cutting edge removed from the holder. Fig. III is an exaggerated cross-section on the line B ofFig. I. .Fig. IV is an exaggerated typical cross-section upon the line C of Fig. I. Fig. V is a typical cross-section through the guide members No. 5 shown in Fig. I and Fig. V. Fig. VI is an exaggerated typical cross-section at the line A of Fig. I. I have provided one stvle of knife for the purpose of illustration. Like numbers of ref erence indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views. No. 1 represents a knife blade body. No. 2 a removable cutting edge therefor. No. 3 is a stop adapted to fit the notch or slot No. 15 in the cutting edge No. 2. Nos. 4: are projections rigidly fixed to or made integral with the blade body No. 1 and adapted to fit on each side of the cutting edge, as clearly shown in Fig. IV. Nos. 5 are projections rigidly attached to or made integral with the blade body No. 1 and adapted to fit each side of the cutting edge as clearly shown in Fig. V. No. 6 is a lug, or projection upon the threaded mem her. No 9 adapted to engage in the slot, or

notch No. 14, in the cutting edge No. 2. N o. 7 is the bolsterrigidly fastened to or made integral with the blade body No. 1; a portion of it is cut away in Fig. I for purposes of illustration, its lower portion being clearly permitted to move forward and backward by the operation of the threaded nut No. 8. No; 10 is a rivet which holds the sides of the handles No. 11 and No. 12 in place against the blade body No. 1, thus forming the handle of the knife. -No. 14 is a notch or a slot in the heel of the cutting edge No. 2, I prefer it cut on an angle as shown.

No. 15 is a notch or slot in the point of the cutting edge No. 2, I prefer it on an angle as shown.

The operation of the device is as follows: When it is desired to change the cutting edge No. 2, the nut No. 8 is revolved about the threaded member No. 9, permitting the member No. 9 to move forward toward the point of the knife. thus relieving the tension on the cutting edge so that it may be disengaged from the lug No. 6 and quickly removed. VVhen it is desired to put the cut ting edge No. 2 in place, the notch No. 15 in the cutting edge No. 2 is hooked on the stop No. 3 between the projections No. 4, the

slot No. 14: is hooked over the stop No. 6 on the threaded member No. 9 and the nut No. 8 is revolved in the direction to pull the threaded member No. 9 toward the handle of the knife, thus pulling the cutting edge No. 2 through the guide projections No. 5 and holding it in tension between the stop No. and the lug No. 6 ready for service.

I am aware that other modifications can be made without departingfrom the spirit of the invention, and I do not therefore limit the invention to the particular form here shown, except as it may be limited by the hereto appended claims, forming a part thereof.

I claim:

1. A knife comprising in combination a blade body, having downwardly projecting spaced members at or near its point and hilt,

a removable cutting edge therefor adapted to be held in tension between the downwardly projecting spaced members, and having its back portion adapted to fit the lower edge of the blade body to form a continuous face, a handle therefor.

; 2. A knife comprising in combination a blade body, having downwardly projecting spaced members at or near its point, a removable cutting edge therefor adapted to have its back portion have a bearing along the edge of the blade body and held in ten. sion between the downwardly projecting spaced members by means of a threaded member projecting through an extension of the knife bolster, said threaded member to be operated by a nut, a handle therefor.

3. A knife of the character referred to comprising in combination a blade body having downwardly projecting spaced members at or near its point and hilt, a threaded member adapted to be projected through the lower portion of a bolster on the blade body,

and adapted to receive a back end of a out ting edge whereby the cutting edge may be held in tension against the lower edge of the blade body by the operation of a nut around the threaded member, a removable cutting edge therefor.

4. A blade comprising in combination, a blade body, a removable cutting blade therefor, having its back portion adapted to fit the edge of the blade body, means for bolding the cutting blade in tension against the edge of the blade body.

5. A knife comprising in combination, a blade body, a removable cutting blade therefor, having its back portion adapted to fit the edge of the blade body to form a continuone face, means for retaining a removable cutting blade in tension against the blade body.

6. A knife comprising in combination, a blade body, having downwardly projecting spaced members at or near its point and hilt, a removable cutting blade therefor, adapted to be held in tension between the downwardly projecting spaced members and having its back portion adapted to fit the lower edge of the blade body to form a continuous face.
