To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, DUDLEY C; BENTON, a citizenof the United States, residing at San Diego, in the county of San Diego and State of California, have invented a certain new and useful Hook and Eye, of which the following is a specification.
My invention. relatesto a hook and eye for fastening two parts of a garment or the like together and the obj ects of Vmy invention are: first, to provide a hook and eye fastener, the members of which are in substantially the same plane whether connected or disconnected so that the garment on which they are attached may be ironed without bending Or flattening the members; second, to provide a hookand eye fastener of this class which is easily hooked and unhooked but when hooked together will remain in hooked position; third, to provide a new and novelly constructed hook and eye fastener; fourth,
to provide a hook and eye of this class whichl is very simple and economical of construction, durable, easy to attach to the garment and will not readily deteriorate or get out of order.
With these and other objects in view as will appear hereinafter my invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the appended claims reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the characters of reference thereon which form a part of this application in which:
Figure 1 is an elevational view, on an enlarged scale, of my hook and eye fastener in its hooked position on a garment and showing portions of the garment broken away to facilitate the illustration; Fig. 2 is an edge elevational view thereof and Fig. 3 is a sectional view through 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Similar characters of reference refer to similar parts and portions throughout the several views of the drawings. Y ,Y
The hook member consists of the loop portions 1 and 2, straight portions 3 and 4, bends 5 and 6 and tongue portions 7 and 8, while the eye member consists of the loop members 9 and 10, straight portions 11 and 12, bends 13 and 14 and cross curve portion 15.
`The loop members 1 and 2 are formed forV securing the devices to the garment and the members extended forming the straight portions 3 and 4,'then the curved portions 5 and 6, then extending forwardly crossing each other at the point 7 a, then diverging to points .b and 8b, then converging to a short turn 8c, 1t being noted that this short turn 8, the end of the hook member is positioned considerably in advance of the loop members 2. It will also be noted that where the members 7 and8 cross each other they are attened and bent over each other as shown best in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings and that the lower side of the loops 5 and 6 are also flattened and bent around the members 11 and 12 of the eye member. The eye member is of the conventional form, except that where thebends 5 and 6 cross it, when they are hooked together, it is provided with bent attened portions as shown best in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings and the curved portion V15 on the side engaging the member 8 is also bent and flattened so that the two members when hooked together or when separate form hook and eye members which are nearly hat and not subject to bending or breaking when ironed as is the ordinary hook and that both of the members lie at on the garment when hooked or unhooked.
Though I have shown and described a particular construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions I do not wish to be limited to this particular construction, combination and arrangement but desire to include in the purview of my invention the construction, combination and arrangement substantially as set forth in the appended claims.
I-Iaving thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A hook and eye fastener, including supporting members and a tongue member in substantial alinement therewith intermediate the supporting members formed by an integrally folded member extending some distance past the supports and crossed on the opposite sides from said supports and an eye member adapted to engage said tongue` member and provided with short bends and flattened portions at their engaging points when connected together.
2. A hook and eye fastener, including a spring wire member folded intermediate its ends to a close bend, then spread slightly, diverging for some distance, then converging and crossing, then bent backwardly and formed into a loop fora support and an eye member adapted to engage and pass over diverging for some distance, then eonverg-' ing and crossing, then bent baekvvardly and formed into a, loop for a support, and an eye member adapted to engage and pass over the closely bent point in U form provided 10 With loops for supporting the same, each of said members being provided With Short flattened bends at the points of engagement when hooked together.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set 15 my hand at San Diego, Californie, this 14th day of August, 1920.
