  • This invention relates to a release snap construction and the principal object is to provide a snap connecting means which can be used in operation of tractors and any other similar places where a flexible member connection is desired for controlling certain parts of the implement or otherwise and which flexible connection is liable to be broken should the draft connection for pulling said implement be broken and the tractor or other draft means proceed ahead leaving behind the implement.
  • This will also provide means for easily detaching the parts of the flexible connection when taking the draft means away from the implement at any other time than when the draft connections may be broken.

ATTORNEY Patented Apr. 1, 1930 STATES ALBERT SUMMER-FIELD, OF SASKATOON, SASKATCHEWAN, CANADA RELEASE SNAP CONSTRUCTION Application filed January 14, 1929, Serial No. 332,314, and in Canada October 31, 1928.
This invention relates to a release snap construction and the principal object is to provide a snap connecting means which can be used in operation of tractors and any other similar places where a flexible member connection is desired for controlling certain parts of the implement or otherwise and which flexible connection is liable to be broken should the draft connection for pulling said implement be broken and the tractor or other draft means proceed ahead leaving behind the implement. This will also provide means for easily detaching the parts of the flexible connection when taking the draft means away from the implement at any other time than when the draft connections may be broken.
With the foregoing and other objects in View, as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of co-operating elements as hereinafter more specifically set forth, claimed and shown in the accompanying drawings forming a part of the present application, in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of the preferred embodiment of my invention showing the snap in interlocked relationship.
Fig. 2 is a modified form of the spring tensionally retained portion of the snap.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the different views.
3 and 4 are ends of the flexible member which are to be temporarily retained together by means of the snap hereinafter described.v
Attached to the end 4 I provide a member 5, having a small loop 6 and preferably a larger loop 7. This member is formed preferably of wire having its central portion twisted, the ends being formed in the twisted portion as at 8. It will be noted that both the loops 6 and 7 have no opening formed therein, the loop 6 being fixedly retained on the end 4, while the loop 7 is'designed to be engaged by the larger loop of the contacting part of the snap. 9 is the engagement member provided with a loop 10 and preferably an enlarged loop 11. This member 9 is preferably formed from wire having a central portion 12 twisted, but in this particular member, the ends 14 are crossed and extend outwardly from the enlarged loop 11 in approximate alignment with the twisted portion 12. The wire forming the member 9 is of such a nature that the ends 14 are retained in tensional contact, so that the loop 7 may be normally retained in the loop 11 and the ten sion contacting the ends 14 will prevent to a considerable extent any displacement of the loop 7 from its normal position in the loop 11, but when it is desired or when necessity occasions the pulling apart of the ends 3 and 4 of the flexible member, the loop 7 can be pulled from the member 11 without causing damage to the flexible members and when desirous of reconnecting the ends 8 and 4 of the flexible member, the loop 7 can be inserted between the spaced ends 14 of the loop 11 and with a slight twist will be engaged into the same. These ends 14 extend in oppositely curved relationship to their respective portions of the loop from which they are formed as an integral part.
It may be desired to have the central portion 12 loosely twisted such as shown in the construction in Fig. 2 so that in this way, I provide for greater flexibility and at the same time retaining the same desired shape of the loop 11 with the ends 14.
The foregoing specification and annexed drawings disclose the preferred embodiment of my invention, but it is to be understood that minor changes may be resorted to in the commercial adaptation of my invention without departing from the scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed.
What I claim as new is 1. A snap comprising an engagement member, consisting of a twisted loop of wire having closed looped ends and an engageable member consisting of a twisted wire having one closed looped end and its other end looped, the ends of the wire forming the extremities of said other looped end crossing each other, said ends projecting in oppositely curved relationship to the body portion of the loop from which they are formed.
2. A snap comprising an engagement member, consisting of a twisted loop of wire having closed looped ends and an engageable member consisting of a loosely twisted wire having one closed looped end and its other end looped, the ends of the wire forming the extremities of said other looped end crossing each other, said ends projecting in opposite- 1y1 curved relationship to the body portion of t e loop from which they are formed.
