UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE A. MARVIN, on SENECA, KANSAS.
CALF-WEANER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 280,642, dated July 3, 188
Application filed April 21,1883. (No model.)
ca, in the county of Nemaha and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oalf-Weaners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figures 1 and 2 are perspective views of my caltweaner.
This invention has relation to devices for weaning calves; and it consists in the construction an'd novel arrangement of the two-branch spring nozzle-piece, having lateral inward pro- 20 jections for the nostrils, and, in connection therewith, a transverse fastening hook-bar or hook-bars, the nozzle-piece and hook-bar, or either of them, being provided with pointed prongs, all as hereinafter set forth.
The device is usually constructed of wire. In the accompanying drawings, the letter a designates the two branch 11 ozzle-piece, formed with a roundedbend, b, or bridge, which passes over the nose, its arms or branches 0 0 being bent inward to form the projections d d, which are inserted into the nostrils from each side.
The ends of the branches are bent in loop form to provide eye-connections at e e, and extend beyond said eye-connections in the form of prongs g g. A transverse hook-bar, h, is connected to one of the eyes 6 by means of a loopbend, 7r, and is provided near its other end with a hook-bend, Z, to engage the other eye 6 of the nozzle-piece a when the branches of the latter are sprung toward each other. The ends of the hook-bar are provided with laterally-projecting prongs m. A second hookbar, as indicated at 1;, may be employed in place of the hook-bar h, or in addition thereto. The hook-bar o is provided with forwardly-projecting prongs 2; When the hookbar is unfastened from the spring nozzle-piece, the elasticity of the latter causes its branches 0 c to spring outward, or away from each other a little, so that the device can be easily removed from the nose of the calf.
IVhen the device is to be attached to the animal, the projections d d are inserted into the nostrils, and the branches 0 c are brought toward each other to clamp the septum between the nostrils sufficiently to prevent disengagement, and the hook-bar having been engaged, the fastening is made secure.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
A calf-weaning device consisting of a twobranch nozzle-piece having lateral inward projections for the nostrils, all formed from a single piece of spring-wire, and a transverse fastening hook bar or bars provided with prongs, and hooks and eyes to connect with the nozzle-piece, substantially as specified.
' In testimony whereof I affix inysignature in presence of two witnesses.
' GEORGE A. MARVIN.
