HOOK' AND EYE..
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, MARY. A. STREHLEIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county oi Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain useful Improvements in Hooks and Eyes, of which the following, reference being had to the drawings accompanying and forming a part hereof, is a specification.
This invention relates to the class of fasteners for garments to detachably'securetwo pliable members; andhas, among its 'ob ects,
to provide asimple and durable hook and eye fastener, which is easily iastened and unfastened, and is not liable-to become accidentally disengaged: to provide a hook-and eye fastener which is readily attached in proper position topliable members of garments, and which, when attached, s not liable to tear the garment, or to produce'any considerable distortion or wear to the garment. An additional object is to obtain a hook and eye it'asteneiy a substantial part whereof is made ofwire, which will present no projecting sharp points or ends. ofwire, and a hook and eye which is of presentable appearance, both before being attached to pliable members of a garment, and after the same is attached thereto, and when the parts i of the device are connected together. p I
An additional objectis to obtain a hook and eye which is economically made and not liable to break or get out of order.
In the drawing referred to Fig. 1 1s a top plan view of the portion of the hook member whichis formed of wire Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the portion of the eye member which is formed of wire.
'Fig 3 is a top plan view of the portion of the hook member which is formedfo-f'wire,
mounted on the disk which forms the base of the hook member. e
Fig. 4 is a top plan view ofthe portionot the eye member which is formed of wire, mounted on the disk which forms the base of the eye member. 7
Fig. 5 is a vertical section of the hook members of the device, on line 5 5 of Fig.
8, viewed as indicated by arrows.
Fig. 6 is a vertical section of the eye member of the device, on line 66 of Fig. 4, viewed as indicated by arrows, with the periphery of the disk member turned over on to the curved portion of the wire member.
Fig. 7 is a top plan view of the hook member of the device with the periphery of the disk member turned over on to the portions of the wire member; and 1 'Fig. 8 is a vertical section of said hook member, on line 88 of Fig. 7, viewed as indicated byjarrows.
A reference character applied to designate a given part indicates said part throughout the several figures of the drawing wherever the same appears.
1 represents the hook member of the deas at 6, 6, to obtain members'7, 7, which are in substantially the same horizontal lane. The wire is again bent, as at 8, 8, and from said last named bends is curved, as at 9 and 10, to obtain elements which are, respectively concentric to the disk forming the base of the hook member of the device. One
end of said wire is again bent, as at 11, Figs.
1 and'3, to-obtain the hump member "12,
' and 13 represents the hump on said member 12. 14, Figs. 3, 5 and 7, represents the disk on which the wire portion of the hook member is mounted; and 15 represents the peripheral portion of disk 14, which is turned over to obtain a head: that portion of said bead which registers with elements 9 and 10 hereinbefore described, is forced down rigidly on to said elements 9 and 10,
thereby securing the wire portion of the hook member to the disk or base portion thereof. The portion of said bead which is on the wire portion of the hook member, at
17, represent apertures indisk 14, through which thread may be extended to attach the hook member of the device to agarment.
Referring to the portion of the eye member of the device which is m'adeof wire, said wireis bent, as at 18, 18, Fig. 6, to obtain the elements 19,19, which are in substantially vertical planes, at the ends of the horizontal element 20 of said wire. Said wire is again bent, as at 21, 21, Fig. 6, to obtain the elements 22, 22, which are in substantially the same horizontal plane; and again bent, as at 23, 23, and from said bends 23 23, the wire is curved, as at 24, 24, to the ends 25, 25, to be substantially concentric to the disk 14 which forms the base of the eye member of the device. 15 represents the peripheral portion of disk 14 which is turned over to obtain a bead and that portionjof said bead which registers with elements 24, 24, of the wire element of the eye member, is forced down thereonto, to secure said wire portion of the eye member tothfe disk portion, or base, thereof. 17 17, respectively represent apertures in disk 14, through which thread is extended to attach the eye member of the device to garments.
, When the hook and eye members are constructed as hereinbefore described, the upper bend of hump 13, is so near to the under face of the parallel elements which extend from bend 3 to bends 4; 4, (Figs. 5 and 8), that some force is required to extend horizontal element 20 of the eye beyond said hump, and to be adjacent to vertical members orjelements 5', 5. And said hump prevents the hook and eye members becoming accidentally disengaged, this being the usual function of the hump? as it is termed, in the ordinary makes'of hook'sand eyes.
VVheIi the hereinbefore' described hook and eye members are attached to the edges of a garment, and said hook and eye are engaged, the disks 14 a-nd14 are in substantially parallel planes with the wire portions thereof between said disks, and substantially concealed thereby from view; so as to obtain a very presentable fastener, having all the advantages of ordinary hook and eye fasteners. The disk members 14 and 14, being secured or attached tothe garment adjacent to meeting edges thereof, by thread extending through apertures 1T, 17 and 17 17?, said disks form bases of sufficient areato prevent distortion of the garment adjacent to said bases, both in attaching' the bases to the garment, and upon said garment being subjected to strain when the hook and eye members are engaged.
Longer wear in a garment, at the edges' thereof, is obtained by me, than would be obtainable if said disks 14, 14, and 14, 14 were not present as set forth.
I claim I 1. In a hook arrangedto co-act with an eye, a wire member, the Wire of said member bent to obtain parallel elements in a si1bstantially horizontal plane, additional par-- allel elements in a substantially vertical plane, additional elements in a substantially horizontal plane and at substantially right angles to the first and secondnamed parallel' elements, and curved elements, in combination with a disk provided with a peripheral bead arranged to cover the curved elements of the wire member, to rigidly join said wire and disk member all arranged so that said wire member is on and wholly within the perphery of said base.
2. In a hook arranged to co-act with an. eye, a wire member, the wire of said member bent to obtain parallel elements in a substantially horizontal plane, additional. par allel elements in a substantially vertical plane, additional elements in a substantial- 1y horizontal plane and at substantially right angles to the first and second named parallel elements, and curved elements, the wire forming one of said curved elements 8 extended and a bend at the junction of said curved element and said extension, to position said extension parallel'to and underneath the first named parallel elements, and said extension being'pro'vided with a bend 8 to form hump, in combination With a disk provided with a peripheral bead arranged to cover said curved elements of the wire mem her, to rigidly join said wire and disk memhere all arranged with said wire member on 9 and wholly within the periphery of said disk.
3. In a hook and eye, a plurality of parts respectively comprising a wire member and a disk member, the wire of one of said wire 9 members bent to obtain parallel elements, in a substantially horizontal plane, additional parallel elements in a substantially vertical plane, additional elements in a substantially horizontal plane, and at substantially right angles to the first and second named parallel elements, and curved elements, in a horizontal plane in combination with one of said disk members,- said disk member provided with a peripheral head a portion of said bead arranged to cover said curved elements of said wire member to rigidly join said Wire and disk member, and the wire of the other wire member bent to obtain a horizontal element, vertical elements at the ends 1 of said horizontal element, additional elements and curved elements in a horizontal plane, in combination with the other of said disk members, said last named disk provided with a peripheral bead a portion of said bead arranged to cover said last named curved elements, to rigidly join said last named Wire and disk members all arranged so that when said wire members are joined said disk members register and said wire members are between said diskmembers and within the peripheries thereof.
