IMPROVEMENT IN BOAT-DETACHING APPARATUS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,041, dated April 22, 1873; application filed January 13, 1873.

Be it known that I, FREDERICK M. MUN- GER, of the United States Revenue Service, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boat-Detaching Apparatus; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, that will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 shows a longitudinal section.

My invention relates to an apparatus for detaching boats from their davits, loosening` both ends simultaneously. The construction of my device is such that it works with absolute certainty, no matter in what position the boat may be thrown by the action of the waves, obviatin g all danger of swamping or staving in rough weather. Moreover, the boat may be more easily attached to the hoisting-tackle, since it requires no slack for hooking on,`it not being necessary to lip the block.

My device -is shown in the accompanying drawing. y

A shows a longitudinal section of a boat; B B, posts or standards at the bow and stern, having slots therein, containing levers a pivoted at b. formed int-o hooks c, and their lower ends weighted so that the open portion of the hooks is kept firmly pressed against the post B, hook and post together thus forming a jaw, h, securing the tackle, which jaw is kept closed by the operation of the weights. At el are other levers, also workin g in the slots, and pivoted at e, so arranged that their upper .ends bear against the lower weighted ends of the levers a in such a way as to raise or throw them out of said slots, thus opening the jaw h and releasing the tackle, when desired. The lower ends of these levers have rods g g, or similar devices, attached to them, extending to a rock- V er, f, preferably in the stern' of the boat, so as to be within easy reach of the person in charge. They are attached to said rocker in such a way that when it is thrown into an up- The upper parts of these levers are right position the lower ends of the levers d are drawn toward each other, pressing their upper ends against the weighted ends ofthe levers a, throwing them outward and opening the jaws 7L h simultaneously, thus instantly releasing the tackle.

An important feature of my invention is the use, in connection with the weighted levers and hooks, of shoulders i, attached to the standards B B on each side of the hooks, the ring on the tackle being inclosed between the standard and the inner side of these shoulders. When the hook, by the operation of the levers, begins to draw out from the ring, the latter is held in'place by the shoulders, allowing the hook to slip through. They also serve to steady the ring in attaching the boat tothe tackle. The rods g g, in practice, are entirely out of the way, being coveredby the flooring of the boat.

A short removable lever may be used to advantage in operating the rocker. (See Fig. l K.)

71 do not claim any of the devices shown in the patent of J. R. Taylor, issued January l, 1867; nor in the patent of N. O. Reynolds, March 29, 1870. My apparatus differs from these both in construction and operation. Nor do I claim, broadly, the rocker F and its attached rods; but

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. In a boat-detaching apparatus, the combination of the standard B and lever a, having a hook at one end and weighted at the other, with the shoulders t' on said standards, said parts being so constructed and arranged as to form a jaw, h, for the reception of the tackle-hook, solid on both sides and on the bottom, substantially as described and shown.

2. In combination with the above, the lcvers d, rods g g, and rocker j', substantially as set forth.
