SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 581,386, dated April 27,1897.

.To all whom, t may concern.-

Beit known that I, MORRIS J. ABERsoN, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Horse-Covers, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to improvements in horse covers or blankets, and the object is to provide the cover or blanket with means whereby said blanket may be applied to the horse by a person seated in the carriage, and this with great ease, rapidity, and thoroughness.

To this end my invention consists in the combination with a horse-blanket, arms connected to said blanket to support the latter around the neck of the horse, another arm supporting a neck-cover, mechanism for operating said arms secured to the blanket, and connections leading from said mechanism for setting and releasing the same; and myinvention consists in certain other combinations of parts hereinafter described, and specifically set forth in the claims.

In the drawings hereto annexed and forming a part of this speci cation, Figure l shows my invention applied to a horse-blanket, the same being applied to a horse. Fig. 2 shows an enlarged side elevation of my device removed from the blanket, the arms beingin a position to embrace the neck of the animal, as shown in Fig. l. Fig. 3 shows the same with the top plate removed to exhibit the interior working parts, and Fig. a shows theinterior when the locking-bar is released, or, in other words, in the position it is placed when the neck of the animal is not embraced by the arms.

Referring specifically to the drawings, A is the horse-blanket, which is adapted to pass around the neck of the animal, and is, in fact, of substantially the same shape as ordinary horse-blankets.

A is aseparate neck-covering, which is of the same material as the blanket.

B is a case containing the locking and releasing mechanism for operating three arms for supporting the blanket A and neck-covering A about the neck of the animal.

portion of the blanket around the neck of the horse, and O is the arm for supporting the neck-piece A. The mechanism operating said arms is contained between two plates of 1netal,which are preferably riveted or screwed together. The plates are held separated by the upturned edges of the lower plate B' or any other suitable and well-known means to allow a system of thin levers connected to the said arms and a central sliding bar b with its springs to work between them.

The device B is secured to the blanket nearly at the center or just back of the neckopening by any suitable and well-known means, as rivets, and, if desired, the blanket may be provided at this point with a piece of leather a for attachment to the device.

Vhen the top plate is secured in place, all the levers are covered, but -when removed they appear as in Figs. 3 and 4. The curved arms C O, 'which are bent downward somewhat, are pivoted at c c between the plates or upon lugs projecting upward from the lower plate. The inner ends of the arms are connected by links or short bars d d with a crosspiece e on the central sliding barb. The bar h is held between two angular plates ff, secured by rivets to the lower plate B'. This sliding bar is provided with a pair of coiled springs g g, which tend to draw it in a direction to open the arms C O, so that thev blanket may be removed from the animal. The said bar is locked against this movement by a hook 7L at its rear end and a lever t', pivoted intermediate its length to the lower plate. A coiled spring j tends to force the rear end of the leverttoward the hook to engage the same.

The central bar is released by means of a cord 7c, passing around a small pulley fulcrumed on a stud Z on the lower plate B and attached to the end of the lever t'. When the cord la is pulled, the hook h is disengaged and the central bar is drawn in by the springs ff until the cross-piece e strikes the uprights mm, secured to the lower plate B, thus separating or openin g the arms. O O, when the blanket may be drawn from the horse into the carriage. (Not shown.)

By means of a cord D, passing through a ring or pulley n, secured to the collar E and connected to ahook o on the plate B', the blanket may be drawn onto the horse again,

and when it reaches the neck another cord F is pulled, which is connected to the central bar, and which draWs the same out until the end of the lever I engages the hook h. The curved arms carry the blanket around the neck of the horse, as shown in Fig. l. The arm C is provided with a slot, through which passes a pin supported in the lugs m m. The inner end of the arm C is pivoted to the end p of the central bar, so that when the bar is released the arm C turns over upon the top ofthe device B, as shown in Fig. Li.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In ahorse-cover, the combination with a blanket, a pair of pivoted arms secured to the edges of the neck portion of the blanket, and mechanism secured to the blanket for turning said arms on their pivots, substantially as described.

2. In a horse-cover, the combination with a blanket, a plate secured to the blanket, a pair of arms secured to the edges of the neck portion of the blanket, adapted to embrace the neck of the animal, and pivoted to the plate, a sliding bar mounted 011 said plate and connected to the said arms, a spring or springs t'o move the sliding bar in one direction and a detent mounted on the plate to engage the said bar, and means to operate the detent, as set forth.

3. In a horse-cover, the combination With a blanket, a plate secured to the blanket, a pair 0f arms secured to the edges of the neck portion of the blanket, adapted to embrace the neck of the animal, and pivoted to the plate, a central sliding bar mounted on said plate, links connecting the said bar With the inner ends of the arms, coiled springs to move the bar, a detent to hold the bar against the aetion of the springs, and means to operate the detent to release the bar, as set forth` 4. In a horse-cover, the combination with a blanket, a plate secured to the blanket, a pair of arms secured to the edges of the neck portion of the blanket, adapted to embrace the neck of the animal, and pivoted to theplate, a central sliding bar mounted on said plate, links connecting the said bar with the inner ends of the arms, coiled springs to move the bar, a lever fulcrumed on a stud on the plate and adapted to engage a hook on the end of the bar, a pulley fulcrumed on the plate, and a cord passing around the pulley and connected to the lever, as and for the purpose set forth.

5. In a horse-cover, the combination with the blanket, a pair of pivoted arms secured to the edges of the neck portion ot' the blanket, mechanism secured to the blanket for turning said arms on their pivots, a central arm attached to a neck-piece,and havin g a slot therein, and a stationary pin passing through the slot, said central arm being connected to and operated by the said mechanism, as set forth.

6. In a horse-cover, the combination with a blanket, a plate secured to the blanket, a pair of arms secured to the edges of the neck portion oi' the blanket, adapted to embrace the neck of the animal, and pivoted to the plate, a sliding bar mounted on said plate and connected to the said arms, a spring or springs to more the sliding bar in one direction, a neck-piece, an arm secured to the neck-piece having a slot therein, a pin passing through the slot and held in lugs on the plate, said arm being pivoted to the sliding bar, a detent to engage a hook on said bar, and suitable means for operating the mechanism, as set forth.

7. In a horse-cover, the combination with a blanket, a horizontal lower plate having upturned edges secured to the blanket, a pair ot' arms secured to the edges of the neck portion of the blanket, adapted to embrace the neck of the animal, and pivoted to the plate, a sliding bar mounted on said plate and connected to the said arms, a spring or springs to move the sliding bar in one direction, a neck-piece, an arm secured to the neck-piece having a slot therein, a pin passing through the slot and held in lugs on the plate, said arm being pivoted to the sliding bar, a detent to engage a hook 0n said bar, a top plate or cover for the mechanism secured to the lower plate, and suitable means for operating the mechanism, as set forth.
