IMPROVEMENT IN TRAVELERS FOR JIB-SH EETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 187,83 l, dated February .27, 1'877; application filed January 6, 1877.

Be it known that I, JOSEPH D. DRINKER, of Montrose, in the county of Susquehanna and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Holding-Bar for Jib-Sheets, of Which the following is a specification Figure l is a top view of my improved bar, part being broken away to show the construction. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved bar for holding the jib-sheet in a fore and aft vessel,.when beating to windward, so as to dispense with a man to attend to said jib. The invention consists in the combination of the notched and grooved bar, the slides, the hinged blocks, the spiral springs, and the ring, with each other, to adapt the device to be attached to a vessel to receive and hold the jibsheet, as hereinafter fully described.
A is the bar, the ends of which are attached to stanchions B, secured to the bulwarks of the vessel. The rear sides of the end parts are grooved or have grooves formed upon them by attaching plates to their sides. At the inner ends of these grooves are formed notches a, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. U are slides, which fit into the grooves of the bar A, and to the forward ends 01' which are hinged blocks D. The outer sides of the forward or inner ends of the blocks D are beveled off, and their outer ends are made thicker than the slides O, to form a shoulder for the ring E, to which the jib-sheet is attached, to rest against. The slides O are drawn and held outward by spiral springs F, attached to their outer ends and to the stauchions B.
The springs F should be detachable, so that they may be adjusted to have greater or less strength, according to the force of the wind.
With this construction, when running upon a starboard or larboard tack, the ring E will rest against the shoulder of one of the blocks, D. ()u going about, the jib, having taken aback, will force the slide 0 gradually inward until the block D enters the notch or, and releases the ring E. The ring E then slides along the bar A, passes up the incline of the other block D, and is caught and held by the shoulder of the said block D.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the notched and grooved bar A, the slides O, the hinged blocks D, the spiral springs F, and the ring E, with each other, to adapt the device to be attached to a vessel, to receive and hold the jib-sheet, substantially as herein shown and described.
