UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN ROW-LOCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 134,821, dated January 14, 1873.
To all wlfomj it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES M. K. SOUTH- WIoK, of the city and county of Newport and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain Improvements in Row-Locks, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to the manner of securing the row-lock to the gunwale of the boat so that it will not get unshipped from any cause, and at the same time may be easily removed if desired. The improvement consists in putting a' falling catch or latch in the lower end of the pivot of the row-lock that shall fall out under the edge of the socket that holds the row-lockfand prevent the latter from coming out until the catch is pushed back.
Figure 1 shows a front elevation of the rowlock. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section taken through line 00 m, Fig. 1.
A is the row-lock. C is the metallic socket let into the gunwale of the boat to receive the shank or pivot of the row lock, which turns in it. c is a vertical latch or catch placed in a slotted recess in the lower end of the pivot of the row-lock, and is held by the pin a, which is put through one side of the center so that the weight of the catch shall cause it to fall outward when left free to do so.
When the pivot of the row-lock is put into the socket the side of the latter presses the catch into its recess, but when the row-lock is down in its place the catch 0 falls out under the edge of the socket and prevents the rowlock from being thrown out. When the rowlock is to be removed, the catch is pressed back into its recess, and it may then be taken out in the usual way, but at other times the weight of the catch keeps it out, and the rowlock is securely fastened into its socket, which prevents its being lost overboard.
Having thus described my improvement, what I claim as my invention, is-
The combination of the row-lock A, catch 0, and socket O, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
