LOCK FOR SELF- DUMPING COAL-TUBS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,940, dated December 11, 1883.
Application filed October 22, 1853. (X0 model) Y To all whom it nmy concern:
Be it known that I, GUSTAVUS L; STUEBNER,
of Long Island City, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Looks for Self-Dumping Coal-Tubs; and I do hereby deelarc that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, whichwill' enable others skilled in the art to whichit ap-j} pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Y Figure 1 is a perspective view of a coal-tub provided with my improved lock; and Fig; 2 is a side view, on an enlarged scale, of the lock.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts in both the figures.
My invention hasrelation to locks for self-' dumping coal-tubs; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of the same, as hereinafter more fully 'described and claimed. N
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates the tub, which is of theusual construction, and which is suspended and pivoted between the arms of the bail B, one arm of which is provided, upon the edgefacinggthe tilting end of the tub, with a catch, 0, beveled This .catch is engaged, when the tub is in its upright position, by a laterally-projecting lug, I), beveled upon its upon its upper side.
A short lever, H, is pivoted upon the side of the tub at one end, to therear of the ways, and passes between the side of the tub and the bolt in a recess, I, in the same, projecting upon the forward side of the bolt, serving to raise the bolt. It will now be seen that when the tub is to be dumped the bolt may be released by rais- -'ingthe-free end of the lever, which will raise the bolt and allow the tub to swing upon its pivots, whereupon, when the tub has been emptied, it will return to its former upright position by the weight of its lower end, and the beveled under side of the lug uponthe bolt will slide over'the beveled end of the catch upon the bail, locking the tub in place until released u again.
"Having thus described my invention, I claim United States- The combination of a catch upon the bail of 60 a coal-tub, beveled upon the upper side of its outer end, with a bolt sliding in ways upon .the side of the tub, having a laterally-projecting lug upon its outer end, beveled upon its under side toward the rear, and a lever pivoted upon the side of the tub atone end, passing through a recess in the bolt between the side of the tub and the bolt, and projecting at the other side of the same, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my 'ownI have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of twowitnesses. Y
GUSTAVUS LABUR'IUS STUEBSER.
