ANCHOR FOR lHE USE OF VESSELS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 2,497, dated March 18, 1842.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVILLIAM HENRY Pon'rnu, of Dunston, in the county of Durham and Kingdom of Great Britain, have invented a new and Improved Anchor Made of Iron for the Use of Vessels; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description.
The nature of my invention consists in a mode of constructing the arms and flukes of an anchor to be applied to the shank by means of an axis, whereby an anchor made according to my invention will be less liable to be fouled by the cable when the vessel is swinging; and when one fluke is holding in the ground the other will lie on, and be sustained by the shank, by which means the vessel will not be liable to have her bottom injured by the upper fluke; and further, owing to the facility of separating the parts, anchors when constructed according to my invention may be stowed away with greater convenience than anchors of other constructions heretofore made; and also possessing far greater strength in the same weight of metal; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 shows an anchor according to my improvements holding in the ground. through them, such a pin or bolt being secured in its place by a split collar or other fastening, and washers or otherwise as may be, as is clearly shown in the drawings; the washers having a buoy chain F, attached to them.
The stock G, is represented to be of iron, but a wooden stock may be applied to anchors constructed according to my inven tion in the manner which is usual to any of the known forms.
The projections H, H, are for the purpose of opening out the under arm and fluke as the anchor is drawn along the ground when it has fallen wit-h the under arm close to the shank.
I would remark that I am aware that anchors have been before made with arms capable of movement on the shank or stem, I) do not therefore claim the same generally,
hat I do claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is the method of constructing the arms and flukes of the anchor with the projections H, H, for the purpose and in the manner described.
