Description

S. WOOLSTON. I CamelforRaisi-ng Vessels.
No. 98,005.. Patented Dec.14,1869.
N. PETERS, Pmw-Limvmfl n Wilmin ton. D. c.
f enna" sine 1 steel lill SAMUEL 5 WOOLSTON, OF VINOENTOWN, NEW JERSEY.
Letters Patent-No. 98,005, dated December 14,1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN CAMELS FOR RAISING VESSELS.
To all whom it may concern Beit known that 1, SAMUEL VVOOLSTON, of Vine centown, New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Marine Camels; and I here- .by declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accom panying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon. I a
In the accompanying drawings- 'Figure l is a top view of my improvedcamel.
Figure 2 is aside view of the same. My invention consists, first, in making the camel in two parts, so hinged together as to be opened to receive a vessel, and then closed around the latter, and
the two parts of the-camel fastened rigidly together, soas to act like an inseparable camel; second, in certain central elevations; third, in a transverse beam for preventing the two halves of the camel from oscil- Iating,:wl1en opened to receive the vessel.
In the construction ol my came], the two halves A A are made separate, au'd conuected by strong bolts" and staples B, at four diil'ereut points. Three of these bolts being withdrawn from the staples, the two halves of the camel are opened on the hinge formed by the fourth bolt and its staples, which are not separated,
To prevent the halves from oscillating upon each other when thus. opened, a crosssbearn, O, is employed, passing transversely throughthe elevations E of the camel a Y The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making oi the same After closing the camel upon the vessel, the bolts are all replaced in the staples, thus binding the two halves'of the camel rigidly together.
In order to give greater room and strength to the staples and bolts, the central elevations E are employed,
and these elevations also serve for the insertion of beam 0, as above, mentioned.
At each side of the well, a high trusst'rame, D, is
erected, for giving additional strength to the camel, and also for the attachment of ropes'iu suspending the vessel.
This camel may be used as a submarine elevator, or as a dry-dock.
Having described my invention,
]. Thev arrangement of the camel in two parts, so
' hinged together as to be opened to receive'the vessel,
and then rigidly united like a single boat, substantially as set forth.
2. The'central elevations E, substantially as set forth. I
3. The cross-beam 0,.arrauged substantially in the manner and for the purposes set forth.
, SAMUEL WOOLSTON.
