Description

(No Model.)
0. F. WIXON] ANCHOR.
No. 411,948. Patented Oct. 1, 1889.
m haenb'or UNITED STATES PATENT FFFICE.
OSCAR F. 'WIXON, OF NEW BEDFORD, MASSACHUSETTS.
ANCHOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 411,948, dated October 1, 1889. Application filed April 29, 1889- Serial No. 308,905. (ll'o model.)
To all whom it may concern:
ie it known that I, OSCAR F. VVIXON, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Bedford, in the county of Bristol and State of lilassachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Anchors, of which the following is aspecification.
The object of my invention is to provide an anchor which can be easily tripped when fast to the bottom, whileat the same time it will have superior holding qualities.
To this end my invention consists in an anchor-stock to the lower end of which are pivoted the flukes having spurs on their inner ends adapted to be inclosed by a ring inclosing the anchor-stock, together with means for sliding said ring on the anchor-stock in order to release the spurs and allow the flukes to assume a position in line with the anchorstock.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a View of my invention as it appears ready to be lowered overboard, and Fig. 2 is a view in vertical section showing the peculiar construction and operation of its parts.
In the drawings, a represents the anchorstock, to the lower end of which are pivoted the flukes I) Z) by the pivots n. The fiukes b h are provided with the spurs m, which are adapted to be inclosed by the ring 0 when the flukes are in the position as shown.
The
ring 0 is connected with the ring (I by the rods 6. The ring d is provided with the rod h. The anchor-stock is provided with the eye g, to serve as a guide for the rod h.
The operation of my improved anchor is as follows: The different parts beingin position, as shown in Fig.1,and fast to the bottom, the line, which is made fast to the rod 72-, is given a pull, which slides the ring 0 upward on the anchor-stock and releases the spurs, when the fiukes Z) fall backward and assume the position as shown in dotted lines Z.
By constructing the anchor with four flukes, as shown, two of the flukes will always be presented for holding on.
Having thus described my invent-ion, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An anchor consisting of an anchor-stock to the lower end of which are pivoted the flukes having spurs on their inner ends adapted to be inclosed by a ring inciosing the anchonst-ock, together with means for sliding said ring on the anchor-stock, whereby the spurs are released and the anchor is caused to let go its hold, substantially as and for the purpose shown and described.
