IMPROVEMENT IN BUCKLE ATTACHMENTS TO l-lARNES S-SADDLES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 137,519, dated Apiil 1, 1873; application filed February 27, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JOHN B. WELPTON, of Tabor, in the county of Fremont and in the State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pad-Skirt and Buckle Attachment; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompa' nying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a pad-skirt and hame-tug buckle attachment, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure l is a front view, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal transverse section, of my invention.

My device consists simply of two plates, .A andB, the bed-plate A being attached to the pad-skirt by means of rivets through the holes a a. The plate B is at its lower end bent upward to form a broad hook, 0, the point of which is bent inward, and should be so made as to spring in receiving the buckle; or it may be manufactured so that the thin point may be hammered down to the body part after receiving the buckle. On the back of the plate B are three projecting lugs, b, which fit in notches on the bed-plate A, and which are designed to take the strain off from the screws (1, which fasten the plates together when in use. The plates B and A may be fastened together by one or more screws d, and the plate B raised or lowered as occasion may require.

The present mode of making pads with layers and billets has always been a waste of leather and labor, as it required alarge amount of material and stitching merely for attaching the pad to the tug-buckle, and in using the layer and billet it frequently rips loose from the pad-skirt, and hence has to be repaired; and frequently the buckle wears the leather and causes it to break. It is not only very expensive, but also very bungling, whereas my invention is much less expensive, and looks very neat and pretty.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The metallic plates B and G, constructed substantially as described, and used in combination with the bed'plate A, whiehis secured to the pad-skirt of a harness, as and for the purpose specified.
