SASH LOCK.
APPLICATION FILED ocr. 1, 1920;

Jormrr. TIENCKEN, or ommnnsromsoornonnomnm 1 SASH-LOGK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 12, 1921.
Application flied October 7, 1920. Serial No. 415,278.
- ble to any ordinary form of sliding sash window to lock the lower sash in either its closed or lowered position orv in itsraised or open position under such conditions as to provide for release with facility from' the inside of the frame while providing against manipulation from the exterior,- the construction and arrangement of the device being such as not to obstruct or constitute an objectionable feature of the window opening; and with these objects in view the in vention consists in the construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the drawing, where- Figure 1 is a frontaview taken from the inside of a window construction with the sash locking means applied in the operative position. p
Fig. 2 is a sectional view showing the lower sash in lowered and locked position.
Fig. 8 is a similar view showingthe lower sash in its raised and locked position.
The device consists of at'ilting latch 10 pivotally mounted as at 11 upon the side of a window frame and having in its arms or oppositely projecting portions seats or shoulders 12 and 13 for respective engagementwith the upper and lower edges of a sash 14 mounted in the usual sash guide 15. Car ried by the sash on or adjacent to the side rail 17 thereof in the vertical plane of the rocker or tilting member 10, are the up er and lower yielding earns 18 and 19, consist ing for example of bowed springs secured at their outer or remote ends as indicated at 20 to the sash and free at their inner, ends to slide upon the surface of the side rail 17. These yielding cams are adapted in the -movement of the sash to slide under the rocker, and taking for example the movement of the sash in raising it to the limit of its openposition, the lower cam 19 after passing under the lower end of the latch will force the upper end thereof inwardly to bring the seat or shoulder 12 of the latch into the path of the lower edge of the sash and thus lock the latter against downward movement. In order to release the sash the upper end of the rocker must be depressed or manually moved toward the plane of the sash against or in opposition to the tension of the spring forming the cam sufliciently to withdraw the seat or shoulder 12 from.
the path of the lower edge of the sash.
Again in lowering the sash to its closed position the upper cam 18 after passing under the upper end of the rocker will move to and force inwardly the lower end of the rocker and thereby position the upper seat or shoulder 12 of the rocker in the path of the upper edge of the sash to lock the latter in its closed position and a depression manually or a movement of the lower end of the rocker toward the plane of the sash in opposition to the tension of the spring forming the cam 18 will be necessary to release the said sash and permit it to be raised. The action of the yielding camsvin adjusting the rocker to cause the alternate engagement of the seats or shoulders 12 and 13 thereof respectively with the upper and lower edges of the sash, according to the adjustment of the sash, is effected without manipulation on the part of the operator. In other words it is only necessary to either lower or raise the sash in order to insure the locking thereof in its adjusted position.
Manual operation of the rocker is necessary in order to release the sash when it is desired to move it from either of its adjusted positions. 2 I 2 Having described the invention, what is claimed as new and useful is:
1. A sash locking device consisting of'an intermediate fulcrumed rocker mounted for swinging movement in a plane perpendicu lar to the path of movement of the sash and having oppositely disposed seats or shoulders for respectlvely engaging the upper and lower edges of the sash and yielding rocker actuatlng cams carried by the sash for movement in the plane of said rocker.
2. A sash locking device consisting of an intermediate fulcrumed rocker mounted for swinging movement in a plane perpendicular to the path of movement of the sash and 5 having oppositely disposed seats or shoulders for respectively engaging the upper and lower edges of the sash and yielding rocker actuating cams carried by the sash for movement in the plane of said rocker, said cams consisting of bowed springs for 1 terminal attachment to the sash.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
