GATE Ann BARN-DOOR LATCH.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Dec. 15, 1914;.
Application filed April 6, 1914. Serial No. 829,795.
To al l inhom-z't may concern i Be it known that I, ILLIAM KIRN, a
" citizen of the'United States, residing at New Gambria, in the county of Saline and State of Kansas, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Gate and Barn-Door Latches, of which, the following is a specification.
-\- My invention -1s a latch of rugged constfirngtion such as is required in a gate latch, or a banirdoor latch, or 111 other places where it is subject to hard use, exposure,
' and abuse.
The object of my invention is to improve generally upon this type of latches; to simphfy and at the same time strengthen the construction; to reduce the necessary number of parts; to avoid the use of separate spring, using the; handle as aspring; to make the latch readily adjustable to any thicknessof door, gate, or other member to which it is to be applied, and to simplify the adjusting means; to make the latch so that it can be used on ordinary swinging doors or gates, and also on single sliding doors, and on double sliding doors; to provide a simple and eflicient" inside look for locking the latch against both opening and closing; and to provide the parts, improvements, and combinations hereinafter set forth;
Figure 1 is a horizontal section of an ordinary side-swing door and ofth'e adjacentdoorjamb, with a plan view of a latch and keeper secured to those respective parts and made in accordance with the principles of my invention, the two face places being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a front or outside view of the same, without the door and jainb. Fig. 3 is a viewof the latch from the opposite side, or inside. Figs. 4 and 5 show the face plates. Fig. 6 shows the stop and guide with a section of the latch lever. on line 6 in Fig. 2. Fig. 7 is a face view of the keeper: and Fig. 8 is a sectional view of same on plane indicated by $3 in Fig. 7. Fig. 0 shows the method of applying thesame parts to double sliding doors. Fig. 10 shows the method-of applying the same latch to a single slide door, with another form of keeper, the keeper being shown in section oi'l plane indicated by the line 10' in Fig. 12. Fig. 11 is another View of the parts an in Fig. 10.
Fig. 12 1 Similar reference characters indicate similar parts throughout the several views.
13 represents a side-swing door, and it the adjacent jamb.
. 1 1 is the pin or pivot spindle extending through the door; the same being turned at substantially right angles and formed with a loop 15, and then returns substantially parallel in the same general rig'ht angular direction, as indicated at 16, the entreme end being turned in close to the spindle portion, as shown at 17.
18 is the outside face plate formed with the two holes 19 for the reception of the spindle portion 1a and the inturned end 17, the plate being secured to the door by means of suitable screws 20. One side of the spindle is flattened, as shown at 21, and the spindle extends through a correspondingly shaped hole in the central or hub portion of the latch lever comprising a handle portion 23 and'a locking arm 2-1, whose end is formed with the successively right-angular portions .25, 213, and 27, as shown in the drawings. The central or hub portion QX- tends, as shown at '28, as a boss, into a hole 80 in the inside face plate 29 secured in place by means of suitable screws 31. The latch lever is iirmly held to the spindle by means of a set-screw 32, which prevents movement of the lever lengthwise 0f the spindle, thus holding the parts in proper relation.
33 is a guide and stop, to limit the oscillating movement of the latch lever.
It will be noted that the outside face plate is so fastened that the two holes 19 are slightly oilset on opposite sides of the horizontal center line of the handle; this being for the purpose of tending to force the handle upwardly and the locking arm of the latch lever downwardly against the guide. Also. the latch is operated by moving the handle downwardly and thus raising the locking arm, the downward movement, of the handle being against the tension of the resiliency of the parts 15 and 16, which immediately restores the latch to normal position on being released. Obviously, by shifting the face plate and the guide stop, the latch may be made to work by lifting the handle, and may be applied left side of the door and respond either to a downward or an upward movement of the handle. It will also .justed to any thickness ofv oor within the" .plates" hold the spindle aways in proper pivotal' -po'sition.
- The keeper 3% is formed. with vertical: slots-35' through which the screws 36 ezitendto' secure it'to the jamb, also witha tongue =3Z that-is tapered, as shown at 39. and also bent inwardly at its-end 37; The tongue is also-formed with shoulders or notches 38.
41 is 'a rod mounted in slots 42 and having ends 40 turned at right angles and em- -bra'cing the top and bottom sides of 'the keeper. F or a side-swing door, the keeper.-
,'is fastened to the jarnb as shown in Figs. 1
' Ward or a downward movement of'the latch 7 I jfthe outside'face plate, and .a latch-lever When used on double sliding doors (see- Fig-9) {the keeper may be attached to one of may be adjusted for an upward. handle; movement, for use in connection with a keeper comprising a' plate 54 withverticalslots 55, and a rib 57 withla notch or shouland 2, When the door is closed, the latch lever rides up on the taperedtongue against. thetensionof thespring'handle and drops in the notch '38. By moving the handle downwardly, the latch lever is released-and the door may be opened. By turning the arms of the rod e1, 40 to the position shown by thedotted outline 43, the latch lever will be locked in place so that it cannot be openedby operation of the handle Also 'soshiftin'g the rod when the latch is-out,
thelatch will be prevented from catching in i 1 the, keeper; This special form of keeper.
may be used 'ior either left or right swing- '.door; also it may be used with either an up- .handle.
the "doors as shownin Fig. 9, the doors being-represented at and 51, the operation being'substantially the same, except that the"- 'endportion 27. engages the tongue andnotch. Fora'single sliding door, the latch der- 58.

The. latch imay bejused' on bam dob 7;.
gates, and elsewhere. I rugged construction'it is capable of hard use. It is strong, durable,"simp1e, and efiicient, and as well has a wide range of use and of adjustment;
Having thus described any invention, 60
what I claim as new and desire to'secure by Letters Patent iszf r j v LlT-he combination of an, outside face plate having two holes adjacent toeach "other, an inside face plate, a spindle extending through-oneyof the holes in the outside face plate'and' also through said inside face plate-, said spindle being formed-with an exteriorv right-angularlv bent portion to form an operating handle and returning to and engaging 1n said other hole, and a latch lever adjustably and non-rotatably secured to the spindle and pivoted in the inside face plate.
2. The combination of, an outside face if: plate, an inside face plate, a spindle extending through'said plates and having its exterior portion bent substantially. at right angles to form an operating handleand also doubled back upon itself to a free end,.s aid spindleand said free end beingpivoted in mounted: on. the spindle and pivoted in the inner face plate.
andalso' -doubled back upon itselfto 'afree end, said spindleand said. free end being pivoted in the face plate, anda latch lever mounted on the spindle.
In. testimony'whereof I have affixed my a signature in presence of two witnesses.
