  • This invention relates to safety catch members for pins, and has for its object to provide an improv-id construction of keeper fhich comprises a pair of spaced-apart side ears having marginal, pin-receiving slots, one of said ears being provided with a hollow-center trunnion bridging the space between the ears. On this trunnion is rotatably mounted a guard member which is adapted to co-act with the slots in the ears to admit a pin tongue and lock the same in the keeper.

This invention relates to safety catch members for pins, and has for its object to provide an improv-id construction of keeper fhich comprises a pair of spaced-apart side ears having marginal, pin-receiving slots, one of said ears being provided with a hollow-center trunnion bridging the space between the ears. On this trunnion is rotatably mounted a guard member which is adapted to co-act with the slots in the ears to admit a pin tongue and lock the same in the keeper.
A. further object of the invention is the provision of means for locking the guard member in closed position.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detail description is taken. in connection with the accompanying drawings, the invention residing in the combination and arrangement of parts as claimed.

With reference to the drawings, 10 designates the usual pi' "stem as being mounted in a joint niunnber 11 att-ached t0 the body portion 12 of a piu. lx1/[y improved safety catch member 13 may be connected to the opposite end of the pin body in any suitable way, to receive the pointed'end of the pinstem. l
This catch member comprises a keeper member which is preferably blanked out of sheet stock into the shape best illustrated in Fig. 2, having a pair of sideears 111 and 15 connected together by a Vbase portion 16. Iia ch of these ears provided with a marginal slot 1"? which entends inwardly from the edge to the center portion. thereof and the car lll is shown as being provided with a trunnlon 18 which entends laterally from the inner face thereof. The inner surface of the opposite ear 15 is providedwith a counterbore or recess 19 into which the end of the trunnion 1S sets.
After having been struck into the shape illustrated in Fig. 2 the ears 14 and 15 are bent up into the shape illustrated in Fig. 3 providing a base portion 1G between them.
In order to close the marginal slots 17 in these ears so to securely lock the pointed end of the pin-stem therein, I have provided a guard member 20 which, as best illustrated in G. is also provided with a marginal slot 21 which maybe caused to register with the slots 1T in the keeper, as illustrated in Fig. S. for the purpose of admitting the point of the pin-stem therein. The center portion f2.9 of this guard member is punched out in circular form and is mounted upon the trunnion 18.
.After having been positioned on the trunmon, as illustrated in Fig. 3, the side ears are then closed into the position illustrated in. Fig. 4L, with the guard member between them.
An operating handle 22 is formed on this sol guard member, which may be engaged by i the thumb and' iinger of the user, to rotate this guard upon its trunnion, and 1n order to providea detent or locking means for retaining this guard when its slot has been moved to close those in the keeper, I have provideda cross-bar 23 which is preferably formed integral With the margin of the ear let and is bent into position to bridge the space between the tivo ears, and this operating handle 22 is preferably formed in somewhat of a Vhook vshape having a recess 24 with a 'slight protuberance 25 near its end `adapted to snap over'the arm 23 when the Vber5 which bar serves as a stop to limit the movement of the guard in the opposite direction and cause its slot to register' with those in the ears. A slight protuberance 30 is also formed on the edge of the lguard to ride under this bar 26 and so serve as a detent to hold the guard in open position.
These arms in addition to the functions describedralso serve to support the guard member against spreading or opening` up when the pin tongue While held therein.I is subjected to heavy opening strains.
In some cases instead of forming the marginal slots on the under edge ofthe keeper ears,- I may form them on the upper edge or opposite the base of these cars as indicated at 27 in Fig. 9, in which case the slot 28 in the guard member will be in position to closethe ears 27 when moved to locked position.
An essential advantage in forming the trunnion integral with one of the side ears and having its free end engaged by a socket in the opposite ear is that by this construction the spreading tendency of these arms is prevented.
- The foregoing description is directed solely toward the construction illustrated, but I desire it to be understood that I reserve the privilege of resorting tol all the mechanical changes to which the device is susceptible, the invention being defined and space. cach ear being provided` with a inarginal slot leading to said hollenY center. and
