1,515,997 c. c. CHAPPELL I SEPARABLE BUTTON Filed Feb. 13 1924 Patented Nov. 18, 1224.
UNITE STATES arenr CHRISTOPHER G. CHAPPELL, OF APPONAUG, RHODE ISLAND.
SEPARABLE BUTTON.
Application filed February 13, 1924. Serial No. 692,493.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, CHRISTOPHER C. GHAPPELL, citizen of the United States, residing at Apponaug, in the county of Kent and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Separable Buttons, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to separable buttons adapted for use in cuffs and for other fastening purposes.
The essential objects of my invention are security, facility of engagement and disengagement, strength, simplicity, and inexpensiveness.
To the enumerated ends primarily my invention consists in such parts and in such combinations of parts as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings which form apart of this specification-- Figure 1 is a side elevation, partially in vertical central section of a separable button embodying my invention,
Figure 2, a section of the same taken 011 line 22 of Figure 1 showing the parts in locked position, and
Figure 3, a like section of the same showing the parts in position of incomplete engaqement.
bimilar numerals of reference indicate similar parts throughout the views.
My button includes an entering member 6 and a socket member 7. The former comprises a head 8, a shank 9, and a base shoe or end plate 10, in the center of which is fixed a post 11 having a reduced end portion or pin 12 forming a resultant annular shoulder 14. Flush with the shoulder on the post 11 are diametrically oppositely disposed lateral lugs 15.
The socket member 7 includes a head 17, a hollow flaring shank 18 integral with or soldered to the head, and a base or shoe or end plate 19 fast to the larger end of the post. This plate is provided centrally with an opening consisting of a central circular portion or hole 21, and oppositely disposed radially extended portions or slots 22. The dimensions of the hole 21 and the slots 22 are sufficiently ample to admit the post 11 and the lugs 15 respectively as a sliding fit. Communicating with the hole 21 are diametrically opposed marginal radial cavities 2 1 formed in the rear or inner face of the plate 19 and disposed at an angle of ninety degrees with relation to the slots 22.
A helical spring 26 in the shank 18 has one end abutting against the head 17 Resting or fixed upon the opposite end of the spring is a cap or plate 27 having a central perforation 28 of greater diameter than the pin 12 but of less diameter than the hole 21 and the post shoulder 14. l/Vhen the button members 6 and 7 are disengaged, the spring 26 press-es the cap 21 tightly against the plate 19.
In order to interengage the button members after separation the post 11 with its lugs 15 in registration with the slots 22, as shown in Figure 3, is pushed through the hole 21 of the plate 19 until the lugs are flush with the inner face of said plate, the pin 12 passing through the hole 28 of the cap and within the spring 26, and the shoulder let of the post pressing against the cap 27 to compress the spring sufliciently for this purpose. While maintaining manual pressure the members 6 and 7 are given a quarter turn relatively to each other, until the lugs 15 register with the cavities 24, as shown in Figure 2, whereupon such pressure is discontinued, and the lugs are held seated and locked in the cavities by the pressure of the spring 26 and cap 27.
I claim 1. A separable button formed in two parts, each having a shank and a head, a post carried by one shank, lateral lugs on the post, a base plate on the other shank provided with a central hole to receive the post, and with slots extending radially from the hole to receive the lugs, and provided with internal seats adjacent the hole between the slots to accommodate the lugs, and yielding means in the second shank engageable with the post to maintain the lugs in the seats.
2. A separable button formed in two parts, each having a shank and a head, a post carried by one shank, lateral lugs on the post, a base plate plate on the other shank provided with a hole to receive the post, and with slots extending from the hole to receive the lugs, and provided with internal seats for the lugs on the edge of the hole, a helical spring in the second shank engaging with one end of the adjacent head, and a cap on the other end of the spring in the path of the post.
5 to the other shank provided with a central hole to receive the post and finger, and with slots opening into the hole to receive the lugs, and with seats in the plate extending to the hole to accommodate the lugs, a helical spring in the second shank in longitudinal alignment with the hole and post engaging with one end of the adjacent head, and a cap on the other end of the spring provided with a perforation to receive the pin.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature.
CHRISTOPHER C. CHAPPELL
