Be itknown that I, ERICK- J. SWEDLUND, a citizen of the United States, residing at l'illiston, in the county of yVilliams and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Separable Cu Buttons, of which the ,following is a specification; f

This invention relates to certa-in new and useful improvements in cuffebuttons of the general class known as separable buttons designed more especially for softV shirts, and'it has for its objects among others to provide a simple and cheap, yet positive and reliable snap fastening embodying simple means for locking the members together and yet permitting ready separation when desired.

lt has for a further objectto provide a but-ton of this general character which shall be composed of few parts, those capable of manufacture at small cost, readily assembled and reliable and most efficient in use.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which,4 with the numerals of reference marked thereon, forms a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is an elevation with the female member in substantially central section with parts in locked position.

Figure 2 is a substantially simiar view showing the parts in position to be separated.

Figure 3 is a plan view of the locking or clutch members separated from the associ ated parts.

Like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the different views.

In carrying out my invention, I form the male member with the face portion 1, the rear portion Q', the intermediate neckY or shank portion 3, the rear portion 2 terminating in a substantially spherical or ball portion 4 having the small neck portion 5, the latter being in axial alinement with the intei-mediate portion or shank 3. This may be made of any suitable material, in one or more parts as may be found most expedient.

The female member comprises the face,

portion 6, the shank 7 and the member 8, the free edges of which are bent inward toward each other forming the annular flange 9, the outer edge of which is bent inward,

as at 10, leaving the enlarged opening 11. It will thus be seen that the chamber or space 12 confined by the flange 9 is dovetail m shape or inwardly tapered, as seen clearly in Figures 1 and 2. l

Within this chamber or space are conned two d1s:s 13 and 14. The disc 14 is provided with lugs or the like 15 which embrace the edgeof the disc 13, as seen best in Figure 3, it being noted that the construction is such that the discs may have sliding movement relative to each other. The disc 13 is provided with an axial opening 16, while the disc 14 1s provided with an axial opening 1r these openings, however, are so disposed that one will be normally eccentric to the other, as seen in Figures 1 and 3.

The disc 14 has its outer face curved or raised, as seen at 18, being inclined toward its opening, this being for a double purpose, namely to guide the ball 4 to the central opening making the coupling or uniting of the parts easy, and also providing convenient means to be reached by the thumb or finger in separating the two parts of the button. Y

As seen in Figures 1 and 2, a small spring 19, preferably of wire, is placed between the two discs to normally hold the discs in such position that the central opening in the disc 13 will be closed by the disc 14. This is when the discs are in the position shown in Figure 1, but when the discs are pressed inward, as in Figure 2, they will have room to expand and adjust themselves so that the male member can be easily withdrawn, as will be evident from said Figure 2. The inward movement of the discs may be readily accomplished by pressure upon the raised portion 18 of the disc 14. When the discs are pushed inward, by applying force to the ball 4, to separate the members 18 and 14. to separate or join the two parts of the button, the disc 13 slides to one side, and when this is done the central openings will be concentric, but when the outside diameters of the discs are even the eccentric hole in the disc 13 will partially 4close the opening and the button will be locked after the manner of a clutch.

The spring 19 finds an abutment against the lug or flange 20 on the disc 13.

Modifications in details may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
