CLIFFORD G. ARMSTRONG, OF MERIDEN, CONI\TECTICUT.
SEPAB-ABLE CUFF BUTTON.
Application filed August 6, 1925.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Cnirronn G. Annsrnono, a citizen of the United States, residing at h'ieriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements in separable Cuff Buttons, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in separable cuff buttons and the primary object is to provide acuff-button of the separable type which has improved means for latching and for releasing the latch Which holds the two members of the button in connected relation, thereby to enable the two members to be easily and quickly separated.
A further object of the invention is to provide means of the described character which are of simple and economical construction and of compact assemblage, which effectively hold the button members latched and which can be easily and quickly released.
In the drawings Figure l is a central longitudinal section view through the assembled button.
Figure 2 is a section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and
Figure 3 is a section on line 8-3 of Fig. 1.
In proceeding in accordance with the present invention, the male member of the button has an outer head 1, an inner head 2 and a tubular shank 3. A sleeve 4 split at 5 has a closed outer end 6 and has its inner end flared and secured to the head 1, and consitutes the male member proper. The latch '7 is of spring U-shaped construction and has its body received in the sleeve. Beveled noses 8 are formed on the outer sides of the arms of the latch, which arms are twisted at 8 and are further formed with fingers 9 engaging the disk 19 of the inner head 2 of the male member.
The female member has heads 11 and 12 connected by a tubular shank 13, a releasing member 1 1- of tubular form having a closed outer end 15 is loosely confined in the shank 13 and is of a diameter to be received over the male member proper 45, whereby upon inward movement of the releasing member 14: by pressing on the closed outer end 15 with a finger of the user, the member 14; will engage over the latch noses 8 and depress same, out of engagement with the edge of the opening 16 in the disk 18 of the inner head 12, of the Serial No. 48,518.
female member. A shoulder 17, is spun on the releasing member 14, so as to restrict outward movement thereof, while the fingers 9 by being engaged with the disk 19 which latter is held clamped between the shank 3, and the head 2 of the male member holds the latch against axial movements.
The latch noses are bevelled to allow the edge of opening 16 to easily ride thereover, whereupon the noses will spring outwardly, after the head 12 passes same, and will engage the head to the rear thereof, thus holding the two button members in latched relation.
lVhen the parts are in latched position it will be noted that the inner open end of the releasing sleeve is disposed over the closed end of the male member proper and is thereby centered and alined with the latch noses to release same upon manual sliding of the sleeve.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a separable button, a male and a female member each having inner and outer heads and tubular shanks connecting the heads, a split sleeve having a closed outer end in the shank of the male member, a U- shaped spring latch member in the split of the sleeve having twisted arms with beveled noses projecting outwardly from the sleeve periphery and engageable with the inner head of the female member, fingers projecting outwardly from the arms of the latch member and engaging the inner head of the male member to restrict axial movement of the latch and a slidable sleeve loosely confined in the shank of the female member and having a shoulder and a closed outer end operable from the outer head of the female member, the inner end of the last named sleeve being engageable with the latch noses to depress same and thereby release the female member.
2. A separable button including a male and a female member each having connected inner and outer heads, a latch carried by the male member and having opposed spring arms, noses on arms engaged with the inner face of the inner head of the female member, parts on the arms engaged with the inner face of the inner head of the male member, and a movable element carried by the female member to engage the noses so as to depress the arms of, the latch thereby to release the noses and said parts of the arms from engagement with the said inner heads.
3. In a separable button, a male and a female member each having inner and outer heads and tubular shanks connecting the heads, a split sleeve having a closed outer end in the shank of the male member, a U- shaped spring latch member inthe split of the sleeve having its arms twisted and provided With beveled noses projecting outwardly from the sleeve periphery and engageable with the inner head of the female member, fingers on the arms of the latch member engaging the inner head of the male member and a slidable sleeve in the shank of 15 In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
