The flanges 20 and 2| are of substantially concave-convex form or dished, as indicated at 22 in Fig. 3, and the end portion of the tubular post part [8 is provided with two diametrically-opposed longitudinal'slots 23, see Figs. 2 and 4. As shown in Fig. 7, the bore 24 of the post part [8 is noncircular in shape; for example, as herein illustrated it is of square cross-section and has two transversely-opposed tapered grooves 25 extending axially inward of its flanged end in alignment with the slots 23.
Associated with the post part l9 and the head I2 is the novel latching means of the present invention for detachably coupling the two separable link parts to securely connect them together end-to-end in their assembled relationship as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. The latching means may comprise a latch-lever 26 pivotally mounted intermediate its-end on a pin 21 extending transversely of the post part [9.
A pilot-member 36 of square cross-section mounted coaxially within the tubular post part [9 is slotted longitudinally in bifurcated form to adapt it to receive the latch-lever 26 between its sides 28, see Fig. 5. The outer end of the pilotmember 30 projects beyond the end of the tubular post part l9 and its associated flange 2| to an appreciable extent to adapt it to be inserted into the bore 24 of the part IS. The latch-lever 26 has a projection or detent-prong 3| at the end of its forward arm 32 for engagement with the end of either one of the slots 23 in the post part l8. The actuating arm 33 of the latch-lever 26 passes through a suitable opening in the wall of the head l2 and engages within a tapered slot 34 extending transversely through the plunger l in the head 12. The shape and length of the slot is such as to permit lost-motion between the plunger l5 and lever 26 for a purpose later explained. The arm 33 also serves as a stop to limit outward movement of the plunger l5 under the tension of its spring l6 as shown in Fig. 4.
, With the parts in assembled relation as shown in Fig. 2, the prong 3l at the free end of the latchlever 26 engages through either of the slots 23 in the post part l8 and is securely held in engagement with the detent end of the slot against inadvertent unlatching by the pressure of the spring l6 applied to the plunger l5. A plungerdisk 35 is slidable in the post part- I8 and adapted to press against the end of the pilot-member 36 under the tension of a helical spring 36 when the parts of the cuff-link are in connected relationship. The spring 36 is held in place by a pin 31 passing through its coils adjacent one end thereof while its opposite end passes through a suitable opening in the side of the head H and is coiled around the reduced shank of the plunger 35. The spring-pressed plunger 35 has as its function to press against the end of the pilot-member 30 to initiate the separation of the two parts of the cuff-link when the latch-lever. 26 is released. The present improved cuff-link is applied to use by inserting the flanges 26 and 21 at the ends of the post parts [8 and 19 through the buttonholes at the sides of the cuff and then connecting its parts by forcing the pilot-member 30 into the bore 24 of the post part is against the pressure of the plunger 35 activated by the spring 36. The beveled end of the prong 31 on the latch-lever 26 will slide through one of the tapered grooves 25 4 and cause the end of the lever to be depressed until the prong passes the end of the slot 23, whereafter the lever will be actuated by the spring l6 acting through the plunger l5 to engage the prong 3| with the detent end of the slot 23. The two parts of the link will then be securely connected to hold the sides of the cuff together.
When it is desired to uncouple the parts of the cuff-link it is only necessary to press the plunger I I5 inwardly of the head l2 to a sufficient extent to cause it to rock the latch-lever 25 and release its prong 3| from the detent end of the slot 23 as shown in Fig. 3. With the latch-lever 30 thus released the spring 36 will act through the plunger 35 to force the pilot-member 36 endwise and initiate the separation of the two link parts. It will be understood that due to the provision of lost-motion between the plunger 15 and the latch-lever 26 any slight movement of the plunger due to accident'will not be sufficient to unlatch the parts of the cuff-link.
It will be observed from the foregoing descriptionthat the present invention provides an improved form of cuff-link comprising two separable parts adapted to be coupled together by sliding a pilot-member endwise into an end opening in the other part. It will be observed also that the two partsof the link may be uncoupled and separated easily and conveniently by the simple expedient of pressing the finger against the plunger on one of the heads. Further, the present invention provides a cufi link of pleasing and ornamental appearanceand of simple and compact .construction to adapt it for. economical manufacture.
While a preferredembodiment of the invention is illustrated and described herein, it is to be understood that modifications may be made in the form and constructionof its partswithout departing from the spirit or scope of the invention. Therefore, without limiting myself in this respect, I claim:
1 A separable cufi-link comprising a twopart post of tubular form with tubular heads fixed to the outer ends of said post parts in substantially right-angular relation thereto, flanges on the abutting ends of said post parts, a, pilotmember held in one post part and projecting therefrom for engagement within the bore of the opposite post part, a latching lever having means adjacent the projecting portion of the pilot-memher for engagement with detent-means within 7 the bore of the opposite post part, resilient means for actuating said latching lever to engage it with said detent-means, and means slid-able longitudinally in one of the tubular'heads for rock ing said lever to release it from the detent-- means to effect separation of the parts of the cull-link.
2. A separable cufi-link comprising a hollow post constituted by two parts adapted to be coupled together in axially-aligned relationship, tubular heads at the outer ends of said post 7 parts projecting at substantially right-angles thereto, means projecting from the end of one post part for insertion into the opposite post part, latching means for holding said post parts in connected relationship, means slidable longitudinally on one of the tubular heads for actuating said latching means, and resiliently-operated means in one post part engageable with the end of the projection on the other post part for forcingthe two parts of the cull-link apart when the latching means is released.
from said detent-means, a spring for opposing the sliding movement of said plunger, a plunger slidable in one of the post parts for engagement with the end of the pilot-member, and a spring acting on said plunger to force the pilot-member out of the post part with which it interengages when the latching lever is released to initiate separation of the two parts of the cuff-link.
4. A separable cuff-link comprising a two-part 6 tubular post of non-circular cross-section, ornamental heads of tubular construction fastened to the outer ends of the post parts in substantially perpendicular relation thereto, a non-circular pilot member projecting from the end of one post part for insertion into the non-circular interior of the opposite post part for maintaining I said post parts in alined relationship and held tubular post with tubular heads last on the outer ends thereof, plugs for closing both ends of one of said heads and one of the ends ofthe opposite head, a plunger slidable in the opposite end of said last-named head, a, spring between the end of the plunger and the plug closing the end of the head for resisting slidable movement of said plunger, a latch-lever on one of the post parts with one end extending through an opening in the plunger, said lever having means at its Opposite end for engaging detent-means within the opposite post part, and pilot-means projecting from one post part for insertion into the opposite post part to maintain said parts in axial alinement.
5. A separable cufi-link comprising a two-part against relative rotation, latching means carried by said pilot-member for engagement with detent-means in the post part in which it is inserted, resilient means for. normally maintaining said latching means engaged with said detent-means, and a plunger in one of the tubular heads slidable longitudinally against the tension of said resilient means for actuating the latching means to release it from the detent-means to permit separation of the two parts of the cuff-link.
