Application led March 57 A1925. Serial No. 13,207.
having cooperating male and `female .inembers having means thereon toloek saidrmembers on insertion of the stem of the .male member within the socketl of the female member thereof and means `operable on furthervpressing together and releasing the said membersto release said looking means to permit separation of said members. So far as I am aware, noone has heretofore provided a separablebutton which will release the looking l.means thereof on further ill) pressing together and .releasing the eoacting male and female members.V The main objects of vmy invention is to provide a separablebutton of this type.
A further object of .my invention is to provide a separable .buttonwhich may be unlocked and looked bythemere operation of pressing and pulling on the bases of thecooperating `male and female members thereof. Where my invention is employed as a separable cuff button, itis obvious, therefore, that to look or lunlock the-.menr bers thereof, it is not necessary to insert thetingers between the cuffs to dirty them.
A. -further kobject of my invention is to provide Va separable button which .can be loe-lied or unlocked in the darli.
A further iobject of my invention is :to provide a separable cuff button having no 4") projecting levers or parts on the members thereof to catch in ortear the cuffs.
A further object of my invent-ion is to provide a separable cuff button having no long longitudinally projecting stem,.making insertion in thecuffs a difficult operation,
A lfurther object of myinvention is to provide a separable cuff button having no nobs or Yprojecting parts -on .the .bases yof the cooperating members thereof to int-erferewith the placing Of-theusual, desirable designs thereon.
These and such other objects of my invention as may hereinafter appear will be best understood from a description of `one ernbodiment thereof, such as ,is illust-rated in the Vaccompanying drawings.
n the drawings, Fig. k1 isa side elevation of a separable cuff button embodying my invention in loclieidposition. l
lliguQ isa .longitudinal*sectional .view of a separable cuff button embodying my invention in looked position, .a portion of the female member being shown in elevation.
yFig. v3 is al Vlongitudinal `sectional view, partly ,shownin elevationfof a separable cuff button employing my invention after the coacting male-and female members thereof have .been further pressedtogether to vstart the functioning of the: means l employ to release the locking means.
Fig. et .is a longitudinal sectional view, partially shown in elevation, ofthe cooperatmg male and female vmembers of a separable .button employing my invention, after the mea-ns I employ to release the loekingmeans thereof'has functioned to release said means topermit .further manual separation ofV said members.
Fig. 5 is a/longitudinal sectional view, partially shown 'in elevation, of the cooperating male and female members of my invention in detached, unlocked position.
Fig. 6 is a cross sectional view taken along the .line 6 6 offFig. 5, showing the pre-v ferred type'of looking spring means I. employ.
-In `the drawings, wherein `like :characters of reference `ilfldicatelike parts throughout, 10 generally represents .a separable cuff button made Ain `accordance `with fmy invention. 12 generally indicates the female member of .my invention and 14 the male member thereof. In the description and claims, I refer to the relative parts 'of said members in they locked position shown in the drawing `with .malemember underneath.
.fl-is stated,.the cooperating maleand female members 12 and .141 fhave means thereon to loclrzvsaidimenrbers together on insertion of the stem of themalemember thereof .within the .socket ofthe female .member and also have tmeans thereon operable on `further pressingtogether and releasing ofsaid meinbers to release said locking means to permit separation of said members. To provide the maleand female members 12 and lil yrespectively, with said respective means, l preferably construct them as follows: The female member 12 comprises the base 16 which may be ornamented in any suitable fashion, if desired, the shank 18, which is preferably hollow, projecting therefrom and terminating in the head 20. The head 20 in my preferredY -embodiment is preferably made in fiat, cylindrical shape, is preferably providedwith a central female socket opening 22, and preferably contains the locking spring 24, non-rotatably mounted therein surrounding the female portion thereof. The hollow head 20 is preferably provided with the washer 26 firmly seated therein having the points 28 struck up therefrom to space the washer 26 from the upper disk 21 of the head 20. Said washer 26 is provided with a sleeve 80 projecting upwards a short distance therefrom provided with diametrically opposed segmental slits 32 on the periphery thereof. The preferred embodiment of spring locking means employed comprises the U-shaped hair-pin spring 24 mounted within said segmental grooves 82. As in similar former constructions, the sides 34 of said U-shaped spring are adapted to expand topermit insertion of the stem of the male member through the female opening 22 and within the hollow shank 18 of the female member, and are adapted to contract to fit within a groove, slits, or other means employed for this purpose on the stem of the male member to retain said members together (F ig. 6). Though I have shown a U-shaped locking spring in my preferred embodiment, it is obvious that any other type of looking means, preferably spring locking means, may be employed suitably mounted in any suitable part of the female member adjacent to the female portion thereof.
The male portion of my invention prefer- -ably comprises the base 40 which may be ornamented in any suitable fashion, if desired, and has the usual rigid stem 42 suitably mounted therein, preferably on the base 40 thereof. In my preferred embodiment, I also preferably rigidly secure the hollow shank section 44 on the base thereof and I mount thereon the head 46, which is also preferably flat and provided with a central opening 47, of appreciably larger diameter than said rigid stem 42, and the sleeve 48 preferably rigidly secured to said flat head portion 50 projecting downwards therefrom and slidable on said hollow shank 44, preferably within. These telescoping members, the rigid shank 44 and the slidable sleeve head section 48 are preferably provided with means thereon to limit the upward movement of the slidable sleeve section 48, in my preferred embodiment this means preferably comprising the outwardly projccting annular lip 52 on the lower end of the slidable shank 48 and inwardly projecting stop lip 54 on the upper end of the rigid shank section 44. The stem 42, which as stated is preferably rigidly mounted on the base 40, extends through said hollow shank and sleeve above said head 50. The portion above said head is preferably enlarged as at 56, the enlargement 56 in my preferred embodiment preferably comprising the cap 56 mounted on the upper end thereof terminating in the annular lower edge 58 which may be beveled, if desired, and also, if desired, offset from said rigid stem as at 60. The stem 42 is provided with a stop 62, a substantial distance below the lower edge 58 of said cap. In my preferred embodiment said stop 62 preferably comprises the lugs 62 struck up from the sides of said stem 42. It is obvious that on insertion of the stem of the male member the sides 84 of the locking Ispring 24 may register below the enlarged head 56 of the rigid stem 42 to secure the cooperating male and female members 12 and 14 together.
I will now describe the specific means I employ to release said lockingvmeans 24 from the stem of the male member to permit separation of said members. In my preferred embodiment said means preferably comprises a slidable sleeve 64 loosely mounted on the stem 42 between said cap 56 and stop 62. In my preferred embodiment said slidable sleeve is also preferably provided with an annular ridge 66 projecting substantially centrally from the periphery thereof. As will be apparent later, particularly if the locking spring means 24 is of a substantial strength, said ridge 66 may be omitted. To cooperate with said slidable sleeve 64, as a means to release the locking means 24, I preferably also provide the ejection spring 68, in my preferred embodiment said ejection spring 68 preferably comprising the helical spring 68 having the base thereof abutting the ba'se 40 of said male member and the top thereof abutting the lower edge 70 of the slidable head sleeve 48. Though said ejection spring is a highly desirable feature of my invention, it may be omitted, as a strong spring 24 alone will raise up the slidable sleeve 64 to close the groove 72, normally formed between the lower edge 58 of the enlarged portion 56 of the stem 42 and the annular ridge 66 on the slidable sleeve or upper edge of said sleeve if said ridge 66 is omitted, as the members are pulled apart.
The operation of my invention is obvious from the above description. To detachably secure or lock the cooperating male and female members 12 and "i4 of my invention together, it is obvious that on insertion of the stem 42 of the male member within the female portion22 and hollow shank 18 of the female member., the sides 84 of the locking spring 24 will expand to permit the insertion of the enlarged head 56 of said and .the upper end of :the slidablefsleeve16.4:A
