EAR-RING FASTENER.

Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, NATHAN LIEBER- FREUND, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, Manhattan, county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ear-Ring Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an ear ring fastener which is of simple construction, may be readily manipulated, and is not liable to become accidently opened.

In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a side view of an ear ring provided with my improved fastener; Fig. 2 a side view of the male member of the fastener; Fig. 3 an enlarged cross section on line 33, Fig. 1; Fig. 4 a longitudinal section of the female member on line IP- 1, Fig. 3; Fig. 5 a front view of said female member, and Fig. 6 a longitudinal section of a modification of the female member.

From the setting or other ornamentation 10 of an ear ring extends a stem 11 provided with a bit 12 set back from the end of the stem, said bit and stem constituting the male member of the fastener.

The female member comprises a back plate 13 having a central opening into which is fitted a tubular sleeve 14 which projects forwardly from the plate. Sleeve 14 is slitted longitudinally, as at 15, to accommodate bit 12, which may be assed back of plate 13 through a radial s 0t 16 thereof, said slot communicating with the central 0 ening of the plate. From the back of p ate 13 projects a bail or holder 17 carrying an axially movable tapped socket 18 which is engaged by a threaded plunger 19 adapted to be lowered with its operative end against plate 13. Plunger 19 is preferably so positioned that when lowered it will engage slot 16, (Fig. 3). An abutment 20 may be formed on back plate 13 to limit the rotation of stem 11.

To close the fastener, stem 11 is passed through sleeve 14 until its bit 12 arrives back of plate 13. A turn is next given to the stem, so that the bit is carried against abutment 20. Finally, plunger 19 is screwed down to obstruct the return of the bit through slot 16 and thereby securely close the fastener.

It will be seen that my improved fastener permits the ready attachment of the ear ring to the lobe, that it may be easily manipulated, and that it securely locks the ear ring against accidental opening.

I claim:

In a device of the character described, a

male member comprising a stem and bit:

extending laterally therefrom, combined with a female member comprising a plate having a perforation adapted for the passage of the stem and bit, said stem and bit adapted for rotation after entering said plate, a

holder on the back of said plate, a socket on the holder and an axially movable lunger engaging the socket and adapted to be lowcred against the plate in the path of rotation of the bit to thereby obstruct the withdrawal of the bit through the perforation of the p ate. 7
