Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS F. Knac- MER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the city of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Pin-Stems, of which the fol.- lowing is a specification.

This invention relates to pin-stems of the class designed to be pivotally mounted between the joint ears of a beauty pin, and has for its object to provide a pin-stem of this character having means in its head portion adapted to engage both the forwardand the rear edges of its joint ears, whereby a front stop and a back stop, respectively, are formed for the pin-stem.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Of the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of a pin showing my improved pin stem mounted therein. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view in perspective of my improved pin-stem. Fig. 3 is a view showing the underside of the head and a portion of the body of the pin stem. Fig. l is an enlarged side elevation showing the head of the pin stem as pivotally mounted between the ears of the pin and in its raised or thrown back position, showing the flange engaging the back edge of the joint ears forming a back stop. Fig. 5 is a similar view of the pin-stem showing the same in its down or locked position and the flange portion of the head engaging the front edges of the joint ears. Fig. (3 is a section on line 66 of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a section on line 7-7 of Fig. 6.

Referring to the drawing 1 designates the body portion of the so-called one-piece cutl' or beauty pin in which the catch member 2 and joint ears 33 are all formed integral with the body portion thereof.

My present invention relates more particularly to the pin-stem designed to be pivotally mounted between the ears of such a pin, the pin-stem being provided with a body portion 4 pointed at one end 5 and provided with an enlarged head 6 at the opposite end. This head may be made in any suitable or desired form or shape, but is Specification of Letters Patent.

herein shown as being substantially of the sector type, the head having a comparatively thin central web or hearing portion 7 with two parallel bearing surfaces, the head being pierced at 8 to receive the pintle on which the pin-stem is pivotally mounted. This bearing portion is provided with a flange 9 extending laterally from either face thereof, the same extending from the edge of the head down the front thereof as at it) beneath the shank 4; of the pin-stem and also extending around over the hearing face as at 11. The inner surface 12 of this upper flange being under cut in a semieireular form on a radius from the center of the pivot pin 12. In other words, the head of the pin stem is formed thicker than is required to fill the space between the joint ears and the center portion of the head is then pressed or swagcd to form the hearing portion narrower, leaving a laterally n'ojecting flange on either face around the top and across the front edge thereof, the front flange 10 being adapted to engage the front; edge 13 of the ears 3 at a point forward and below the pivoting point to form a front stop or fulcrum, to give to the pin-stem the required spring or tension when its pointed end onters the catch member The portion 1.4L of the flange which extends to the rear of a vertical line drawn through the pivoting point is adapted to engage the straight portion 15 of the rear edges of the joint cars and form a back stop when the pin-stem is raised to the desired angle to be inserted into the fabric.

I claim:

1. The combination with a pair of joint ears, of a pin-stem pointed at one end and provided with an enlarged flattened head at its opposite end adapted to be pivotally held between said joint ears. said head being provided with an integral laterally extending flange housing said ears and having one portion adapted to engage the for ard edges of the joint ears below the pivoting point to form a front stop, and another portion to engage the rear edge of said joint ears to form a back stop for the pin-stem.
