To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN FIELDING, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the city of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Catches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in safety catches more particularly designed 1 is a side elevation showing a pin with myimproved catch as retaining the pointed end of the pin-stem. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view showing the blank from which the body member is formed. Fig. 3 is a front elevation showing the body member as bent into the desired shape, the keeper being re moved. Fig. 4 is a side elevation showing the body member in section and the keeper mounted therein and in closed position. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the keeper member. 7
Referring to the drawings, 10 designates the body member which is preferably constructed of sheet-metal, first into the form illustrated in Fig. 2 after which the wings 11 are folded rearwardly until they stand spaced apart into the position illustrated in Fig. 3. The upper end 12 of the body portion is slotted as at 13 and bent over forwardly into a hook shape as illustrated in Fig. 4. Two protuberances 14: and 15 are formed on the under face of the hook portion by striking the outer surface thereof and crowding the stock inward. The keeper member 16 is made in substantially a U- shape and pivoted at 17 on the pin 18 which passes through the eyes 19 in the wings 11.
This keeper is provided with an arm 20 which extends up under the hook portion and its extremity engages the protuberances lat and 15. The other arm 21 extends upward into the notch 13 of the hook portion, its end 22 extending just beyond the surface of the hook whereby it may be readily engaged by the thumb or finger of the operator for moving the keeper to open position.
One of the features of this invention is that the keeper member is split at the point 23 from its lower edge inward to the pivot eye 24:, the walls of the split portion being practically in contact whereby when the keeper is in open position the same is moved to closed position by the arm 21, the arm 20 owing to the split portion is permitted to yield quite readily in contacting with the protuberances 14; and 15 and by bending forward slightly is permitted to pass these protuberances very easily, but when an opening strain is applied on the arm 21 the walls of the split portion abut and the arm 20 is prevented from springing and yielding, thereby resisting somewhat the opening mo tion. In other words by my improved construction the keeper may be readily moved to closed position but is much harder to be moved to open position thereby effectually preventing accidental opening of the catch.
I have described one illustrative embodiment of my invention but the specific terms employed are not for the purpose of limitation, the scope of the invention being defined and limited only by the appended claims.
I claim: 7 1. A safety catch comprising a body member having an attaching base and a pintongue receiving opening, a keeper pivoted in said body having two'arms, one or more protuberances on said body member for engaging the extremity of one of said arms, said keeper being split from its margin into its pivot eye, whereby the arm engaging the protuberance is permitted to yield in passing to closed position and resist movement to open position.

A safety catch comprising a body member having a portion bent over into a hook form and having two side wings near its base folded forward and spaced apart from each other, a keeper pivoted between said wings and having a lock arm extending up beneath the hook shaped portion of said JOHN FIELDING.
