Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OrrrcE.
ALMON PERRY YERS, OF BENTON HARBOR, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPOOL-HOLDERS AND THREAD-CUTTERS.
Specification forming part of Lettrrs Patent No. 137,282, dated April 1, 1873; application filed July 1, 1872.
To all whom t may concern: y
Be it know that I, ALMoN PERRY AYEns, of Benton Harbor, in the county of Berrien, State of Michigan, have invented a device to be attached to spools having sewing-thread, twine, or other small cordage wound upon them, of which the followingis a specification: rJhe above-mentioned device is to be made of sheet meta-l and wire, and so constructed as to be attached to spools for the purpose of cutting oft' and holding securely the loose end i of thread, twine, or other small cordage as the same may be drawn oft' inlengths for use, and to be adapted in size to the size of the spool upon which it is intended to be used.
Figure 1 is an end view, showing an end piece of the device, marked c, and the milled head c of the bolt d, and also the ap or holder b, together with the hooked cuttingoff knife e. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, containing the spool f having thread wound upon it, and the flap or holder b held rmly upon the thread by means of a spiral spring inclosed within the hinge of the ilap, as shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is the same without the spool, with the flap or holder turned up, showing the construction of the hinge, which is made by turning the upper or broad end of the tlap around the small bolt g, which is rigidly affixed to the extension of the end pieces a a', and the spiral spring wound upon the same, and also the boltcl which passes through one of the end pieces and fastens to the other end piece by means vol" a screw out upon the end of the bolt, permitting the spool to rotate freely.
I do not claim the hooked knife e, for I am aware the same is not new.
The end pieces a a, center-bolt al, hinged ap b carrying a cutter, e, hinge-bolt g and its spiral spring, all combined and arranged as shown and described.
ALMON PERRY AYERS.
