SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 346,583, dated August 3, 1886.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, EDGAR M. GoRBETT, of the city of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented new and Improved Scissors, of which the following specification is a full, clear, and exact description. I

This invention relates to scissors or shears combined wit-h a tape-case, so that the article to be cut may also be measured by the same instrument. Heretofore such case has been attached to the pivot that connects the blades so as to project beyond one of the sides of the scissors. I contemplate to place the case between the handles. This is accomplished by attaching the case to the inner edge of one of the handles, and by making the inner edge of the other handle of concave" form to accommodate the case. In this way the case will not prevent the free use of the scissors, and will at the same time be properly protected.

Theinvention consists in the features of im provement hereinafter more fully pointed out.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a face view of the scissors, showing them closed. 1 Fig. 2 is a sectional face view showing them open.

The letters a a represent the blades of a pair of scissors or shears, connected by pivot c, and provided with handles 1) I), as usual. The handle b is provided or made in one piece with an inner drum, d, containing a tape-measure, e, projecting out of a slot in the drum. The inner end of the tape 6 is secured to a revolving cap, f, within which a coiled spring, 9, is contained. One end of the spring g is connected to cap f, while the other end is connected toa central post, h.

On drawing the tape out of the drum the spring is wound up, so that when the tape is released the cap is revolved and draws the tape into the drum.

In order to permit the tape to pass through the handle I), the latter is perforated at i, as shown.
