SPEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 664,786, dated. December 25, 1900.
' Application filed May 7,1900. Serial No. 15,763. on model.)
To (LZZ whont it inwy concern.-
Be it known that we, GEORGE O. SErcHELL and HORACE E. SETCHELL, citizens of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fishing-Poles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in fishing-poles, and more especially to reels adapted to be used in connection therewith. Its primary object is to provide a reel of cheap and durable construction which may be readily applied to any pole.
Another object is to provide a device which occupies the minimum amount of space, which may be quickly changed from a click to a free-running reel, which permits free access of air to the line when wound thereon, and having means whereby the reel may be locked against revolution upon its pivot.
To these ends the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of our invention, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the handle in raised position. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section therethrough with the handle in lowered position, and Fig. 3 is a plan view thereof.
Referring to said figures by numerals of reference, 1 is a fishing-pole having a recess 2 formed therein and to the bottom of which is secured a plate 3, having a stud 4 projecting from the center thereof and provided with an annular flange 5 at the bottom. A ratchet or click wheel 6 is secured to the stud at a point above the flange 5. The plate 3is provided near one end with a transversely-extending recess, within which is journaled a cross-strip 7 ,having upwardly-extending arms 8 at each end thereof. A plate 9, formed, preferably, of spring metal, is secured at one end to the base-plate 3 and bears upon the cross-strip '7, as shown.
Revolubly mounted upon the stud 4 is a reel 10 of novel construction. This reel comprises two similar substantially oblong plates 11, the inner one of which bears upon the flange 5 at the center, while the outer plate is provided with an inwardly-projecting stud 12, within which is journaled the stud 4. The plates 11 are secured together near each end by means of connecting strips 13, one of which is provided with ears l5,between which is pivoted the end of a handle 16, which handle is adapted to swing outward through an aperture 17, formed in the outer plate 11. A catch 18, preferably formed of spring metal and having a recess 19 therein, is pivoted to the outer plate 11 and adapted to swing into engagement with the handle 16 and hold the same in raised position, an car 20 being provided at the edge of said catch to engage the walls of the aperture 17, and thereby retain said catch in locking position. Secured to the inner plate 11, near the opposite end of the reel, is a cross-strip 21, within which is slidably mounted a wire or rod 22, which projects through the stud 12 into engagement with the teeth of the click-wheel 6. The outer end of this rod projects outward through a slot 23, formed within the outer plate, and it is obvious that by sliding the same back and forth within the slot the inner end thereof will be brought out of or placed into engagement with the wheel 6. A catch 24 is pivoted to the outer plate 11 and is provided with two recesses 25, each of which is adapted to engage the end of the rod and hold the same either in or out of engagement with the wheel 6.
One end of the recess 2 is preferably provided with a wall 26, formed of suitable material and having a passage 27 therein, at one side of which is an inclined groove 28, which extends to the surface of the rod.
The operation of the device will be readily understood from the foregoing description when read in connection with the accompanying drawings.
By means of the arms 8 the reel may be readily locked against rotation. A reel of the construction shown permits the line to be rapidly taken up. Moreover, as the reel rests within a recess within the pole and as the handle can be swung inward when not in use, the pole and reel may be readily packed in compact form without necessitating the detachment of the parts. It will be seen that by shifting the rod 22 the device can be quickly converted into a click or a free-running reel.
In the foregoing description we have shown the preferred form of our invention; but We do not limit ourselves thereto, as We are aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages thereof, and we therefore reserve the right to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall Within the scope of our invention.
Having thus fully described our invention, what We claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a pole having a recess therein, of a plate secured within said recess, arms pivoted Within the plate, a stud, and a reel mounted upon the stud, and adapted to be engaged by said arms.
2. The combination with a pole, of a stud projecting therefrom, a toothed wheel upon the stud, a reel mounted upon the stud, a rod slidable within the reel, and means for locking said rod into, or out of, engagement with said wheel.
3. The combination with a pole, of a stud the stud, a toothed wheel upon the stud, a
reel mounted upon the stud and bearing upon the flange, a rod slidably mounted Within the reel, and a catch adapted to hold said rod into, or out of, engagement with the wheel.
4. The combination with a pole, of a stud projecting therefrom and having a toothed Wheel thereon, an annular flange upon the stud, a reel mounted upon the stud and hearing upon the flange, a rod slidably mounted Within the reel, a catch for locking said rod into, or out of, engagement with the Wheel, and means for locking the reel against rotation.
5. A reel comprising similar plates, having apertures therein, a handle pivoted Within the reel, and adapted to swing outwardly therefrom, and means for locking the handle in raised position.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE G. SETCHELL. HORACE E. SETOHELL.
