useful Improvements in Pacifiers or the like,
struction herein shown and described will be obvious to those skilled in the art, from the disclosure herein given.
To this end my invention consists of the.
novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, wherein like reference characters indicate like or corresponding parts, a
fi Figure 1 is a perspective view of a paci- Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the same,
Fig. 3 is a sectional view through the cap 10 before securing in place, and
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the same.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a body; for example, a jelly ordinarily made up of gelatin and other constituents which is incased in a covering 2 of rubber or the equivalent. Parts 1 and 2 are arranged on a plate 3 provided with an opening 4 therethrough, through which the open end 5 of thecasing 2 is extended. Plate 3 is of the preferred materialand of the desired size and shape. Arranged within the covering or casing 2 at the open end is a button of suitable material, for example, Wood, bone, or other material that will hold its shape, the button consisting of a head 6, shank 9 with the end of the shank enlarged as at 8. The head 6 is larger than the opening 1 through the plate, while the enlarged portion 8 is of a size that it may be passed through the opening 4 when assembling the parts. As will be seen from Fig. 2, the head 6 is arranged to engage the casing 2 and Specification of Letters-Patent.

substantially lock the same between the head" andplate3. 1 Arranged over the plate 3' at the back sidethereof is'a cover or cap, 10 which may be flanged as at 11 and seat inja'recess 12 in the plate 3. The cap 10 extends upwardly as at 14;, the top 16 being preferably dished slightly and cut out and formed with a cross.
bar 17 so asto'providefa 100p or opening 18, through which a cord 20 orits equivalent, for example, a wire, ribbon, ring or r r the like maybe passed. In assembling the device, body 1, cover 2, plate 3 and the button are arranged substantially as shown, and cap lOpositioned on the same, the cap being constructed substantially as shown in'Fig. 3 With the button pushed back as far as possible, the cover is then crimped, bent, or otherwise formed as at 15, or in an equivalent manner, so as to engage the inner side of the enlarged portion 8 of the shank, thereby rigidly locking the parts together. It may be mentioned that in crimping the part 10 at 15, the same is preferably not perforated in any way so as to cause openings through which dirt and dust or germs may get within the cap. In this connection it will be noted that the end of the button is constructed at 19 so as to closely fit the dished end or top 16 of the cap,'and seal the same thereat.
When a pacifier is constructed, as described, it is practically impossible for dirt,
1. In a device of the kind described, the
combination with a plate having an open-' ing passing therethrough a nipple open at one end and arranged with theopen end extending through the opening in said plate, a button member having an enlarged portion of a size greater than the opening in said plate disposed within the nipple, the
tlierethrough, a suitably filled nipple a'rranged at one side ()i said plate With, the open end extending through the opening in said plate, button arranged Within the nipple and of length to project through said opening beyond the open endof the nipple and'having an enlarged head, a cap member for the enlarged head of said button, the outer end ofsaid button flared beyond the shank thereof, said cap member erimped to engage the flared end of said button and formed to engage the plate, whereby the but? ton is rigidly maintained in place and the nipple locked against Withdrawal between the edge of the opening through the plate and the'head of the button. j i
'3. In a pacifier of the kind described and in combination, a plate provided with an opening therethiough, a nipple consisting of a body and a cover arranged thereover,
said cover open at one end and projected through the opening in said plate, a button consisting of an enlarged portion and shank and an enlarged head smaller than said enlarged portion, the said enlarged'headbeing of a size suificient to pass through said opening, aca'p member mounted on the plate and (tO'v'GllHg the enlarged head of said button,
vsaid a p member formed to engage the inner side of the enlarged head and rlgidly main tain the head ofthe button in position to engage the cover of the nipple about theedge of the opening, said cap'memberformed at the outer end of the shank to tightly fit the end thereof, and provided With'means for securing a cord thereto.
