IMPROVEMENT IN SHIRT-FRONTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,771, dated March 11, 1873.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J A. SORIVEN, of New York, in the county of New York and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shirt-Fronts and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference bein ghad to the accompan yin gdrawin g making a part of this specitication, inl which is shown a front elevation of a bosom constructed in accordance with my improved method, a portion of the outer fabric being broken away so as to show the arrangement of the interior parts.
The design ot' my improvement is to afford all necessaryr rigidity to a shirt-bosom to cause it to maintain afy smooth appearance, and at the same time to enable it to bend without breaking at the point where it is conued by the waistband ot' the pants; to which end it consists, as a new article of manufacture, in a shirt-bosom constructed substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.
In the `f.v.innxed drawing, A represents a shirtbosom of' usual form, provided, preferably, with a lining, B, between which and said bosom is placed a stiffening, G. From a point somewhat above the level of the waistband the stiffeningO is removed upon a line which, from each side, extends inward and downward, and then outward in a curve, as shown, so as to leave at or beneath saidv waistband a narrow strip only of said stiffening.
As thus constructed, the rigidity of the bosom above and below thewaistband is suicient to afford the necessary support or set, while at said waistband said bosom will readily yield and coliform to the position of the wearer without affecting its other portions.
I am aware that shirt-bosoms have been constructed with the stiifening entirely removed upon a line corresponding to the position of the waistband of the wearer and that, therefore, I was not the first to construct a bosom -with a greater degree of exibility at the point JEREMIAH ANDERsoN soRIvEN.
