- My invention relates to tools for manipulating the valve operating rocker arms of internal combustion engines, and specifically those of the type commonly used in Buick automobiles; and the particular object of my improvements is to provide a simple and eilicient tool whereby each rocker arm may be grasped and swung upon its pivot, so as to depress its valve operating end, against the action of the valve spring, and to raise its opposite end to allow it to be disconnected from or connected to the actuating rod, to which it is normally coupled, thereby facilitating the disassembling or assembling of the valve and attachments, as is necessary from time to time.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. NEWTON, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Plainville, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rocker-Arm Tools, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to tools for manipulating the valve operating rocker arms of internal combustion engines, and specifically those of the type commonly used in Buick automobiles; and the particular object of my improvements is to provide a simple and eilicient tool whereby each rocker arm may be grasped and swung upon its pivot, so as to depress its valve operating end, against the action of the valve spring, and to raise its opposite end to allow it to be disconnected from or connected to the actuating rod, to which it is normally coupled, thereby facilitating the disassembling or assembling of the valve and attachments, as is necessary from time to time.
The details of my invention I will now proceed to point out and claim.
In the drawings Figure l is a side view partly in section of the rocker arm and associated parts of a Buick automobile en gine, with my improved tool applied thereto, part of the handle of the tool being broken out to shorten the figure; Fig. 2 is a side view and Fig. 3 an edge view of the tool; and Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view looking to the right on the line H of Fi s. 2 and 3.
The same parts are designated by the same reference numerals in all the figures.
The tool is unitary and integral; and embodies a handle 1, with two oppositely extended arms 2, 3, the arm 3 being longer and projecting farther forward than the arm 2 and being supported by a stiffening web 5 extending back along the handle 1.
This arm 2 is provided at its end with suitable means for giving it a sure bearing upon the back of the forward end 6 of the rocker arm, the drawings showing this means as consisting of a slight recess 7 adapted to receive the back of the rocker arm.
The arm 2 of the tool is deflected to one side so as to pass down by the side of the end 8 of the rocker arm, and is provided Specification of Letters Patent.

with an inturned part 9 adapted to be passed under and grasp the rocker arm as shown in the drawings.
The proportions of the parts are such that when the tool is applied to the rocker arm of a Buick engine, as shown in Fig. 1, the arm 3 will bear upon the top of one end 6 of the rocker arm, and the element 9 of the arm 2 will engage below the other end of the arm, while the handle will extend up in the vertical plane of these points of contact, so that when force is exerted upward upon the handle, the strain will be applied directly and evenly to the rocker arm to de press one end of it and to lift the other end, without any tendency to sideplay or tarvin Hence, also, the tool will pull true, and wi l have no inclination to rock to one side or the other of the vertical plane of its handle. The inclination of the handle, relative to the rocker arm, is such that a person standing on the ground beside the automobile will be able to grasp the handle in one hand with the thumb up, and with his elbow depressed and thereby be in a position to exert a powerful upward thrust against the handle so as to readily overcome the resistance of the valve spring.
This grip also allows the operator to lower the handle again and to disconnect the tool from the rocker arm, when it comes to rest, by a simple sidewise movement.
I thus secure a unitary, integral device which is simple in construction and efiicient in operation and which affords the mechanic or automobile operator a handy, available tool, for manipulating rocker arms, always ready for use, without adjusting, which has heretofore been lacking in the art.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. In a tool for rocking the rocker arms of Buick engines, the combination of a handle provided with a depressing arm having a recess in the end thereof adapted to engage above one end of a rocker arm, and a laterally defiected elevating arm provided with a prong adapted to engage below the other end of said rocker arm, the points of contact between said tool arms and said rocker arms being disposed in the same vertical plane as the tool handle.
