Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Tnnonon SCIIULZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at'Olivet, in the county of Hutchinson and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Staple-Pullers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
V This invention relates to certain improvements in staple pullers and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character wherein are employed two relatively movable pivoted jaws adapted to effectively engage a staple, and serve as a fulcrum whereby the requisite strain may be imposed upon the staple to assure its extraction.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved staple puller whereby certain important advantages areattained and the device is rendered simpler, less ex ensive and otherwise more convenient and a vantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to'the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is an elevational view illustrating a staple puller constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention; I

As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes a plate substantially oval in form and having its outer end provided with the transversely disposed recess 2. Arranged adjacent the forward end of the plate and substantially at opposite sides of the recess 2, arethe pins 3 having pivotally engaged therewith the jaws 41 extending beyond the outer end of the plate and curved lnwardly so that when saidjaws are operatively disposed through a staple, either ofwhereby said jaws will serve as a fulcrum d upon the the requisite strain may be impose staple to assure its extraction.
The jaws 4 are provided with the rearwardly disposed extensions 5 with which coacts the cam member 6 pivotally supported plate 1, and as herein embodied, said cam in- .cludes a substantially inwardly and transversely disposed rounded extension 7 which eoacts with the cam edge 8 formed on the inner end of one of the extensions 5, and is also provided with a substantially forward and longitudinally disposed extension 9 adapted to coact with the inner end of the extension 5 of the second jaw 4, whereby it will be perceived that upon the cam member 6 being rotated in one direction, the extensions 5 will be moved in unison in opposite directions and thereby resultin in an inward relative movement of t e jaws 4, whereby the same may be effectively forced through a staple.
As herein disclosed, the cam 6 is provided with a rearwardly disposed operating handle or lever 10 coacting with the stationary handle or lever 11 carried by the plate 1, whereby it will be readily perceived that the device may be operated by a, hand of the user. The extensions 5 of the jaws 4 are maintained constantly in contact with the cam member 6 through the medium of the retractile member 12 interposed between the extensions 5 at a point intermediate the pivotal mountings of the jaws 4 and the cam 6, said retractile member being herein disclosed as a conventional coil spring having its extremities suitably engaged with the extensions 5.
In order that the jaws 4: may be maintained normally in separated relation, I provide the stationary handle or lever 11 with the flat spring 14 which coacts with the handle or lever 10 of the camfi, whereby said handles or levers 10 and 11 are normally maintained in separated relation. I also find it of advantage to provide the outer edge of the cam G with a notch 15 coacting with a notch 16 suitably produced in the periphery of the plate 1, whereby the device may be employed with facility and convenience as a wire cutter.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a staple puller constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure and extending beyond an end thereof, saidaws being curved one toward the other, the end of the plate intermediate of the jaws bein recessed, inwardly disposed extensions earned by the jaws, one of said extensions being of a greater length than the extension of the second jaw, a cam member pivotally supported by the plate at a point rearwardly of the jaw provided with the short exten- V sion, said cam being provided with a-substantially transversely disposed extension formation, in carrymg out my inmember interposed between and and coacting with the longer extension, the outer contacting edge portion of said extension being of cam and a substantially longitudinally disposed extension coacting with the inner edge of the short extension, aretractile to the extensions of the jaws'for maintaining said extensions in contact with the cam, a stationary handle carried by the plate, a handle carried by the cam and coacting with the first named handle and a spring interposed between the handles for normally maintaining the same in spaced relation.
