, Application filed February ed to move toward and away from the other jaw member while remaining substantially parallel with the second jawv member, whereby a relatively great number of hairs or strands of hair can be gripped uniformly between the aw membersand thus crimped uniformly.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a curling iron of the character described which includes two cooperative elongated crimping jaws or members which will be maintained substantially parallel with each other at all times and. which also includes simple and conveniently and easily operable means for opening'said jaw mem here when desired. e
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparentfrom the following description, considered in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the im proved curling iron, showing the jaws closed,-

The improved curling iron comprises two cooperative elongated jaws 1 and 2, respectively. The jaw 1 may be a straight rodlike member, as shown, made of a suitable metal, having an integral shank portion 3 which is curved reversely along arcs struck by radii of relatively great length, the rear end portion of the shank 3 being connected in any suitable known manner, as by means of the ferrule with a handle 5. The handle 5 preferably is of wood or any other suitable heat insulating material. The arrangement is such that the handle 5 will lie in a' plane which extends plane of the jaw 1.-
The jaw 2 is arcuate in cross sectional contour and is adapted to overlap and partia'lly receive the aw 1 when the jaws land 2 are in closed position as shown in Figure obliquely to the p v ing disposed at the side of the-lever 9 which 9, 1928. Serial No. 87,126.
1, The jaw 2 also is made of a suitable metal. The jaw 2 is formed with integral parallel extensions or arms6 on the sides of the jaw 2 at the rear end of the latter. The arms 6 straddle the rearward end portion of the jaw 1 and extend substantially at'right angles to the direction of length of the jaw 1. These arms 6 are formed with aligned elongated slots 7 which extend longitudinally of the arms 6. The slots 7 constitute guide slotsthrough which oppositely extending aligned guiding and retaining studs or'projections 8 on the rearward end portion of the jaw 1 extend, the slotted portions of the arms 6 being in sliding contact with the projections 8. The outer ends of the projections 8 preferably areupset as shown to prevent any appreciable lateral play of the jaw 1 between the arms 6 when the jaws 1 and 2 are open without such pressure of the arms on the jaw 1 as might cause considerable friction or retard the movements of the jaw 2 between closed position as shown in Figure 1 and open position as shown in F igure 2. The pro ections 8 may be the extending ends of a pin which eX- the arms 6. The forks 10 are enlarged edgewise at the rearward ends to produce a pair of cars 12 which straddle the shank 3 inter mediate the length of the latter and to which the shank 3 is attached by means of a trans verse pivot element 13 which thus constitutes a fulcrum for the lever 9. The rearward end portion of the lever 9' carries a finger piece or button 14 whichissecured to the lever 9 in any suitable known manner, asby means of the rivet 15, this button beis remote from the handle5.

of a spring bar 17 presses. The rearward end portion of the spring bar 17 is secured, as at 18, to the shank 3 and the forward end portion of the spring bar 17 extends between the sleeve or roller 16 and the rearward end portion of the jaw 1.
From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof may be readily understood. The spring bar 17 exerts pressure on the roller 16, tending to resist movement of the arms 6 and therefore the jaw 2 from the position shown in Figure 1 to the position shown in Figure 2. \Vhcn it is desired to move the jaw. 52 from the position shown in Figure l to the position shown in Figure 2, the finger or fingers of a hand in which the handle 51 held are extended over the rearward end portion of the lever 9 against the button 14. and the rear 'ard end portion of the lever 9 is swung toward the handle 5, thereby swinging the forward end portion of the lever toward the jaw 1 against the action of thespring l7 and moving the jaw 2 away from the jaw 1.
This movement of the jaw 52 relatively to the jaw 1 will be guided because of the engagement of the studs or projections S with the guide slots 7 and the jaw 2 will remain substantially parallel to the jaw 1 at all The pressure which the spring 17 exerts on the roller 16 will be increased as the jaw 2 moves from the position shown in Figure 1 toward the position shown in Figure 2 and when the, grip 011 the rearward end portion of the lever 9 is relaxed, the spring 15 will function to return the jaw 52. to closed positlon, as shown in Figure 1.
Obviously, my lnvention is susceptible of embodiment in forms other than that which illustrated in the accompanying drawing and I therefore consider as my own all such inodificationsand adaptations of the form thereof herein described as fairly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim j i l. A curling iron comprising a pair of cooperative elongated jaws, a curved shank rigid with one of said jaws at the rearward end of the latter, a handle rigid with said shank, the axial line of said handle extending obliquely to the axial line of said one jaw, a pair of arms extending from the rearward end portion of said other jaw in straddling relation to said first jaw, a lever fulcrumed intermediatoits length on said shank and pivotally attached at its forward end to the arms on the second jaw, and guide means for maintaining said second jaw substantially parallel to said first jaw while permitting bodily movement of said second jaw relatively to the first jaw.
A curlingiron comprising apair of cooperative elongated jaws, a curved shank rigid with one of said jaws at the rearward end of the latter, a handle rigid with said shank, the axial line of said handle extending obliquely to the axial line of said one jaw, a pair of arms extending from the rear ard end portion of said other jaw in straddling relation to said first jaw, a lever fulcruined intermediate its length on said shank and pivotally attached at its forward end to the arms on the second. jaw, guide means for maintaining said second jaw substantially parallel to said first jaw while perrnitting bodily movement of said second jaw relatively to the first jaw, spring means r-esisling increment of said nuwable jaw away from said other jaw and tending to return said movable aw toward said other jaw, and a button on the rearward end portion of said lever, said button constituting a finger grip member.

A curling iron comprising an elongated stationary jaw of rod-like form, a shank integral with said jaw at the rearward end of the latter, said shank being curved reversely along arcs struck by radii of relatively great length, ahandle secured on the rearwardend portion of said shank, the axial line of said handle extending obliquely to the direction of length of said stationary jaw, amovable elongated jaw of arcuate cross sectional configuration and adapted to overlap and partially receive said sationary jaw, the sides of said movable jaw having extensions constituting arms straddlingrthe rearward end portion of said stationaryjaw,
said arms extending substantially at right angles tothe directionof length of themovable jaw, said arms having aligned slots extending longitudinally thereof, oppositely extending projections on the rearward end portion of said stationary jaw extending slidably through saidslot, a lever having forks straddling said shanks, the end portions of said forks straddling the end portions of said arms, a transverse pivot element connecting the lappedportions of said forks and said armspa transversepivot ele ment connecting the rearward end portions of said forks with said shanks, and an elongated spring member having the rearward end portions thereof secured to said shanks and extending between said first named pivot elementand said stationary aw and exerting pressure on said firstnamed pivot element,

A curling iron comprising a jawof rod-like form, a shank rigid with said jaw at the rearward end of the latter, a second jaw for cooperating with said first named jaw, the rearward end portion of said second jaw having spaced extensions constituting arms straddling the rearward end portion of the first jaw, said arms extending substantially at right angles to the direction of length of the second named jaw, a lever fulcrumed intermediate its length on said shank and pivotally attached at its forward end to the arms of the second jaw, and guide means for maintaining said second jaw substantially parallel to said first aw while permitting bodily movement of said second jaw relatively to the first jaw.
