UNITED STATE @Flgeln ETI-IAN I. DODDS, 0F PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO FLANNERY BOLT COME'ANY, OF EITTSBUEIGH, BENNSYLVANIA.
STAYBOLT STRUGTURE.
Lacasse Application led January 20, 1920.
To all w hom t may concern Be it known that I, ETHAN I. Donne, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Staybolt Structures; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and enact description oit the invention, such as will enable others skilledhin the art to which it ap pertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in staybolt structures for boilers,-one object of the invention being to provide a structure comprising separable members and in which a threaded bearing member may be employed and so mounted in the b oiler sheet or connected therewith as to provide a universally adjustable Amounting whereby proper alinement of the staybolt with its points of connection with the respective boiler sheets shall be insured and so that the structure shall be rigidly united to the boiler sheet after proper adjustment shall have been eltected.
`With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construption and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l. is a sectional view partly in elevation illustrating an embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 is a view showing the bearing member so mounted in the boiler sheet as to project beyond the same and provided with a plug closure, and Figs. 3 to 11 are views showing modifications.
1 represents an outer boiler sheet and 2 the inner sheet of a boilerf-with which latter vthe inner end et a staybolt 34 may be se cured in any suitable manner and the outer end of said stayboltis provided with a head e whichis connected withthe outer boiler sheet lby means ot devices hereinafter de scribed; p Y
The outer boiler sheetv is provided with an opening, a4 portionro'f the wallet which is rounded to formr a seat 5 for the rounded peripheral portieri 6 ofA a bearing ringv 7. The inner end portion ofthe bearing ring 7 is threaded as at 8 to receive the @Xtericrly Speccation of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 4t, 1921.
Serial No. 352,696.
threaded portion 9 of a bearing member 10. The outer end portion of the bearing ring '7 is threaded interiorly as at 11 for the reception of a plug closure 12 and the latter is provided with an angular portion 13 for the reception of a \vieneh,-tlie outer end of said plug closure 12 and its angular portion 13 lying flush with the outer end et the bearing ring 7 and, when the structure is employed as flush mounting, with the outer face of the boiler sheet. rlChe bearing ring .7 is provided interiorly, between the threaded portions, with an annular flange 14C which lies between the bearing member 10 and the closure l2. The upper end of the closure may abut against the under face ott' the flange la and a gasket 15 will preferably be interposed between the upper face of said flange and the under 'face of the closure 12. lt will be observed that as the bearing ring., has a universally movable mounting in the boiler sheet, the bearing member may be adjusted. to insure proper alinement of the staybolt with its points of connection with the respective boiler sheets and when such adjustment shall have been effected, the bearing ring will be united to the boiler sheet by means oit a weld 16 which occupies a groove formed by a beveled portion 17 of the wall in the boiler sheet and a portion of said ring.
The bearing member 10 is provided interiorly with a seat 18 for the head of the staybolt and a portion of the interior of said bearing member is threaded as at 19 so that when said bearing member is mounted in the boiler sheet with a portion projecting beyond the outer tace of the same as shown in Fig. 2, la plug closure 20 having an angular head 21 may be screwed into said bear ing member.
When it is desired to use the mounting solely as a ilush structure, the internal threading 19 of the bearing member may be omitted as shown in Fig. 3.
l It will be'observed that the rounded portion of Vthe bearing ring and bearing inember are struck from diii'erent centers but they may be struck from the same center so that the curvature of one will aline with thecurvature of the other as shown in Fig. a and if desired a gasket 22 may be interposed between the outer end ot the bearing member and the under face of the flange 111 in the bearing ring 7.
In Figs. 1, 3 and a the bearing ring is united to the boiler sheet by the Weld 16, but when the bearing member 10 is mounted as shown in Fig. 2, a Weld 23 surrounding said bearing member unites the latter With the outer Atace ot the boiler sheet.
ln the embodiment of the invention shown in Figs. 5 and 6, la represents a outer boiler sheet and 2 the inner boiler sheet,-With which latter a staybolt 3a is connected in any suitable manner and the outer end ot said staybolt is provided With a head 4t which is connected with the boiler Sheet by means of the devices hereinafter described.
In Fig. 5, wherein the device is shown as a llush7 structure, the boiler sheet 1a is provided with an opening, a portion of the Wall of which is rounded to provide a seat 5 and another portion ot said Wall may be made Haring as at 6a.
fr sleeve 7 is adapted :tor universally 'movable mountingin the opening in the outer boiler sheet and this sleeve is formed eX- teriorly with rounded races 8a and 9, the former ot' which has universally movable mounting on the rounded seat 5a in the boiler sheet When said sleeve is so mounted that its outer end is Hush with the outer tace of the boiler sheet 1 as shown in F ig. 5. rlhe sleeve 7a is threaded interiorly as at 10CL and at the outer end of this threaded portion a shoulder 1la is formed and the outer portion oi the opening in the sleeve is somewhat greater in diameter than is the threaded portion.
A bearing ring 12a is threaded into the inner end portion of the sleeve 7a and is provided interiorly with a rounded seat 13 on which the head of the staybolt has its bearing, and the inner end portion of the opening in the, bearing ring may be made :flaring as shown at 111a to permit the swing7 of the staybolt. By thus providing a bearing ring which is threaded into the inner end portion of the sleeve 7, the bearing tor the head of the staybolt may be adj usted and by mounting the sleeve 7a in the boiler sheet so that it may be universally movable, a proper alinement ot the staybolt with its points of connection with the respective boiler sheets Will be insured.
A closure a having a threaded exterior portion is screwed into the threaded portion of the sleeve 7a and is provided With an annular i'lange 16a which cooperates with the shoulder 11a to limit the inward movement of said closure. The closure 15u is recessed to form a olearancespace 17L for the head of the staybolt and said closure is provided with an angular portion 18a to receive a Wrenoh,sa1 d angular lporincense tion lying iiush or substantially so With the outer end of the sleeve 7a. The peripheral Vportion at one end of the sleeve '7a forms,
with the beveled portion 6 of the Wall of the opening` in the boiler sheet, a groove in which a vveld 195L is located to fiXedly unite the sleeve 7a to the boiler sheet.
When it is desired to so mount the device that it Will project beyond the outer boiler sheet la, the rounded inner end portion 9a of the sleeve 7 Will be mounted on rounded Wall a of the opening 21a in the boiler sheet, as shown in Fig. 6, and the sleeve will be united to the outer boiler sheet by means of a weld 22a which surrounds said sleeve approrimately at the juncture oi its rounded portions 8a and 9a.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in Figs. 7 to 11, 1b represents an outer boiler sheet and 2l the inner sheet ot' the boiler, vvith which latter the inner end of a staybolt 3l is connected in any suitable manner and the outer end of said staybolt is provided with a head lb which is connected with the outer boiler sheet as hereinafter described. ln Fig. 7 the boiler sheet is shown provided With an opening having a portion of its wall rounded to form a seat 5" and another portion ot said ivall may be beveled or Haring as at 6b. Y
A ring 7b is located (in Fig. 7) Within the opening in the boiler sheet and is rounded exteriorly so as to have universally movable Amounting on the rounded seat 5" in the boiler sheet. The outer end portion ot the ring 7b has greater diameter than the inner end portion interiorly of the ring and both oit' these portions of the ring are threaded 'interiorly as at 8 and 9b. By thus making the ring with dii'erent diameters interiorly, a shoulder 10"J is formed. A bearing member 11h having a rounded exterior portion 12 struck from the same center as the rounded exterior portion of the ring 7", is provided with an externally threaded shank or extension 12b Which is screwed into the inner end portion ol the ring 7b and between a shoulder 13b formed on said bearing member and the inner end of the ring, a gasket 14h is interposed. rJ'he bearing meinber 11'b is provided interiorly With a roundA ed seat 15b for the head ab o'l the staybolt.
A closure 1Gb having peripheral screw threads is inserted into the outer end portion of the ring 7'b and meshes with the threads 8b therein and between said closure and the shoulder 10b in the ring 7b and the outer end of the extension 12b of the bearing member 11b, a gasket 17b may be interposed. The closure 16h may be made convex so as to provide a clearance space 18b Jfor the bolt head and said closure may be provided With ribs 19 to facilitate the application of a Wrench.
After the mounting has been adjusted to insure proper alinement of the bolt with its points of connection with the respective boiler sheets, the ring 7b may be united to the boiler sheet by a weld 2Ob which occupies a groove formed by the beveled portion 6l of the wall of the opening in the boiler sheet and a portion of the ring 7".
If desired the opening in the boiler sheet- 1b may have its wall rounded approximately from the outer to the inner face of the sheet and the mounting may be seated in the open-l ing so as to be universally movable on such wall, as shown in Fig. S. In this instance, the ring 7b projects a comparatively short distance beyond the outer tace of the outer boiler sheet and both the ring 7b and the bearing member llb are mounted on a rounded seat in the boiler sheet. When thus mounted the ring will be united to the boiler sheet by a weld 21" surrounding said ring.
In the construction shown in Fig. 9 the wall of the opening in the boiler sheet is made with a comparatively shallow rounded wall 22b on which the rounded portion ot the bearing member only has universal mounting. `When the device is thus mounted it will, after having been adjusted, be united to the boiler sheet 1' by a weld 23b which surrounds the inner end portion ot the ring 7h and also a portion of the bear ing member 11b.
Instead of providing a ring 7" having two diierent inside diameters as shown in Figs. 7, 8 and 9, the ring may have a uniform inside diameter throughout as shown in Fig. 10.
In the construction shown in iFig. l1, the external rounded portions of the ring 7* and the bearing member 11b are struck from different centers, instead of both being struck from the same center, as shown in Figs. 7 8 and 9.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. In a staybolt structure, the combination with a boiler sheet having an opening, a bearing device having two portions, each portion having rounded exterior and either or said rounded portions adapted to seat against the boiler sheet at the opening therein, a seat in one portion of the bearing device, a staybolt having a head mounted on said seat, and a removable closure for said bearing member over the head oi' the staybolt therein.
2. A mounting for the head of a staybolt comprising a bearing ring having a rounded exterior and having an internal annular lange, said bearing ring having threaded portions at respective sides of; said flange, a bearing member for the head of a staybolt screwed into said bearing ring, and a closure screwed into said bearing ring at the other side ot said flange, said flange being interposed between said bearing member and closure.
In a staybolt structure, the combination with a boiler sheet having an opening therein, of a bearing ring having an initially universally movable mounting in said opening, said bearing ring having internal screw threads near respective ends, a bearing member threaded externally and internally and entering said bearing ring, a threaded closure entering said bearing ring, said bearing ring having an internal annular flange interposed between said bearing member and closure, a weld uniting said bearing ring to the boiler sheet, and a staybolt having a head mounted in said bearing member.
In testimony whereof I have signed this speciiication.
