T 0 @ZZ/107mm #may concern:
Be it known that I, E'rrinn' I. Donne, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of littsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvement-s in Stay-Bolt Structures; and I do hereby declare the following t0 be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it apport-airis to malte and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in staybolt structures for boilers and particuarly to means for mounting the head of the sta-ybolt in the outer boiler sheet,-one object of the invention being to provide a simple and efficient structure comprising two inembers removably connected together` which may have an adjustable mounting relatively to the boiler sheet and be welded to the latter when adjusted, and which shall be capable of being so connected with the outer boiler sheet that its outer end may be substantially flush with trie outer face of said sheet or of being so mounted as to project beyond the outer face of Jthe boiler sheet.
A further object is to provide a two-part structure comprising a bearing member and closure which shall be so connected and associated that either or both may be seated in the opening in the boiler sheet.
1With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
in the accompanying drawings; Figure l is a sectional view, partly in elevation, showing an embodiment of my invention; Figure 2 is a view showing` another manner in which the devices may be mounted in the opening in the boiler sheet; Figures 3 and 4 are views showing different ways of mounting a modified structure, and Figures to 18 are views showing various modifications.
1 represents a boiler sheet having an opening the major portion of the wail of which may be straight and substantially cylindrical, but the wall of the opening in the boiler sheet is rounded near its inner end, near the inner face of the boiler sheet, to form a rounded seat 3 for a bearing structure (as hereinafter described) in which the rounded head 4: atthe outer end of a staybolt 5 is mounted,-the inner end of the staybolt being secured to the inner boiler sheet 6 in any suitable manner.
The bearing structure above referred to, comprises a bearing ring? haring an internal rounded seat 8 for the rounded head of the staybolt, and a hollow member 9 approximately senii-elliptical in cross-section,the latter being threaded interiorly, as at 10, to receive the threaded peripheral portion of the bearing ring. The member 9 constitutes a closure over the bolt head and is so formed as to provide a clearance space 11. A gasket 12 is located between one end of the bearing ring 7 and a shoulder 12 in the closure member 9.
The closure member 9 is rounded exteriorly, as at 18, and has a universally movable or adjustable mounting on the rounded seat 8 in the boiler sheet, and said closure member may also be provided with an angular portion 14 to receive a wrench.
By so mounting the bearing structure in the opening in the boiler sheet that it may be universally movable, it may be readily adjusted to insure accurate alignment of the staybolt with its point of connection with the respective boiler sheets.
It will be observed that in the embodiment of the invention shown in Figure 1, the bearing structure is so mounted in the opening in the outer boiler sheet that its outer end will be substantially flush with the outer face of said sheet. That portion of the opening in the boiler sheet between the outer portion of the closure member 9 and the straight wall of said opening will form an annular space and within the inner portion of this space, a weld 15 is located (when the bearing structure shall have been properly adjusted), said weld overlying a portion of said closure member and fixedly uniting the same to the wall of the opening in the boiler sheet.
In the embodiment of invention shown in Figure 2, the bearing structure is so mounted in the boiler sheet as to project beyond the outer face of the latter. In this instance, the inner portion of the opening 1G inthe boiler sheet may have a straight wall, but the other portion of the wall of said opening-is rounded, as at 17, and both the closure member and the bearing ring have universally movable mountings on said rounded seat, the inner end portion of the ring being made with a rounded face 18 for this purpose in the saine are asthat ol the rounded portion l0 of the closure niember. lrVhen the bearing structure is thus mounted, it will be Welded to the outer face of the boiler sheet by a Weld 19 which surrounds the closure' member of said structure.
ln the'construction-shown in Figure 3, the
boiler sheet l is provided with a tapering opening 20, the inner l portion of the wall ot Which is slightly curved to provide a. seat 2l `for a-closure member 22 which is so located in the opening in the boiler sheet that its central portion will be substantially flush With the outer :tace of the boiler1 sheet. The closure member shown in Figure 3 is approximately semi-elliptical in cross section, presenting a curved or rounded peripheral portion 23 so that the structure may have .a universally adjustable mounting on the seat afforded by the wall or" the opening in the boiler sheet. The portion Q3 of the closure member is threaded internally for the reception of the bearing ring 24rin which the head of the staybolt is mounted, and said bearingring is .formed with a shoulder 25 to receive the edge of the closurermember. The tace 26 of the bearing ring is rounded in the same arc as that of the portion 23 of the closure member. `At Weld 27 Within the opening in the boiler sheet unites the structure to the latter.
The bearing structure shown in Figure Llis the same as that shown in Figure 3, but in Figure 4; the Wall of the opening in the boiler sheet is made to form a rounded seat 28, and the bearing structure is so mounted von this seat that both members 22 and 24 engage the same and are thus mounted so as to be universally adjustable. In Figure 4 the closure member 9.2 is united to the outer face of the boiler sheet by a Weld 29.
In the construction shown in Figure 5,
.the bearing ring only has a universally movable mounting in the opening in the boiler sheet and the closure member 30 is made conical and beveled at 3l, both of said members being united to the boiler sheet by a Weld 32. By making the closure member'eonical, it may be mounted in aconical opening in the boiler sheet when a flush mounting is desired, and Welded to the sheet at the beveled portion 31.
`In the embodiment of my invention shown in Figures 6 to l1, l represents an out-er boiler sheet and '2a an inner boiler sheet, with which latter, the inner end oit a staybolt 3- is connected in any suitable manner and said bolt is )rovided at its -outer end With a head 4a which may be connected with .the outer boiler sheet as hereinafter described.
In Figure 6, thel outer boiler sheet l is provided -with an opening 5, a portion ot which may be cylindrical and has a diame- Y ter appreciably greater than that of the Y staybolt which passes through it, and a portion of said opening is enlarged and rounded to form a rounded seat 6a.
' 7 represents a bearing sleeve or member, the inner' lend portion ot which may be rounded to provide a rounded exterior portion 7b which may have a universally movable or adjustable mounting on the rounded seat 6a in the boiler sheet, and a rounded interior seat 8a on which the rounded head of the staybolt has its mounting. The outer Vend portion of the bearing sleeve `is threaded externally as at 9a and receives the internally threaded flange l0L of a one-piece closure member lla. A gasket 12'v may be disposed between the closure member lla and the outer end of the bearing sleeve 7a.
The peripheral portion of the closure member and its Yflange are rounded, as indicated at 13 and Illa (the rounded portion 1B being, in eit'ect, a beveled edge) and said closure member may be madewitli an angular recess 15L to receivel a Wrench.
When the bearing structure is mounted as shown in Figure 6, (in which the bearing sleeve is universally adjustable on its seat in the boiler sheet to insure proper alignment oliI the staybolt With its points of connection with the respective boiler sheets), a Weld 16a surroun'dingjsaid'sleeve unites the same With the outer face of the boiler sheet. Y
lVhen a Hush mounting is desired, the
structure may be mounted in the boiler sheet as shown in Figure '7. rllhe outer boiler sheet is here shown as provided With an opening 17, a portion of the Wall of which may be made tapering and the inner portion ot said Wall may be made slightly curved to form a seat 1S for the rounded portion lita of the closure member lli-fthe major portion ot the latter' being located Vwithin the opening in the boiler sheet With its youter end substantially flushY With the outer tace ot said sheet. Thus it will be seen that in Figure 7, the closure member llL has a universally adjustable mounting in the opening in the vboiler sheet and that the strain exerted by the bolt on the Vbearing sleeve is sustained bythe closure mem ber. Y
The rounded portion Vl5a of the closure member cooperates with the straight outer portion of the Wall of the opening inthe .boiler sheet to form a groove in which a weld 19a is located and serves 'to iizredly unite the closure member to the boiler sheet, after any necessary adjustment ot the bearing structure shall have been effected.
ln the construction sh'oivn in Figure 8, ka bearing sleeve 2Oa is provided near its upper or outer end with a rounded seat 2l?L for the rounded head 4l) o1 the 'stayb'oln' said head' being shown ovoid in shape, and the boiler sheet l 1s made with an opening 22 which may be cylindrical throughout its major portiem-the outer end portion of the opening being enlarged and its Wall rounded to :torm a seat 23 for the rounded exterior portion of the bearing sleeve. The bore ot' the opening in the bearing sleeve may be made tiaring :from the seat 21 to the inner end ot said sleeve as indicated at 2l?.
