To @ZZ who-m t maycoucem:
Be '1t knownfthat '1, JLjssE LYNDS, Aa
citizen of the United States, presiding' at Muskogee,'in the 'county' of Muskogee and State of Oklahoma, have invented new and useful l improvements which the following is a specification. j
My invention relates, in general, to an" adjustable wrench, and more speciically to' a wrench'of light andstrong construction embodying but few working parts.
A further object of the` invention is to provide a wrench whichwill'lbe cheap and economical to manufacture 'and which will be capable of application in places where the space is limited.
Reference is made in the following specication to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a preferred form of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a transverse section on the line H of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 5 is a detail view of the removable rib as applied to the adjustable jaw.
The wrench consists of the body 1 which is recessed at its upper end to form the opposite side walls 2 and 3 which terminate in theupper Xed jaw members 4. rlhe lower part of the body is cut away in order to secure lightness and economy in material and is also provided with an aperture 6 by which the wrench may be suspended on the wall of the work-shop, if desired. The side walls 2 and -8 are longitudinally grooved, as shown at 7 and 8, which grooves are adapted to receive, respectively, a rib 9 fixed to the adjustable jaw 10, and a re- 'inovable rib 5 hereinafter described.
The side of the adjustable jaw opposite from the fixed rib 9 is provided with a groove preferably in the form of a mortiseA shown) may be placed transversely throughV Specification of LettersiPatent.v
thefrib and'adjustable 'jaw 10 "for'further securing thel removable rib in place.
The adjustable jaw' 10 has downwardly,`
extending shank`12 which fits lwithin a hole 12 bored within thefbody 1.' The hole l2 terminates at its upper end 'ina transverse recess 12a, openat lits upper end, which re? ce'ss'is provided at'itslow'e'r end`with a shouldered portion 13 adapted lto sustain anv adjusting rmt/1a'.l The adjusting nutV 14 'also bears" upon thecylindrical sides 1,5 of the terminal recess and'is'adapted to internally receive the threaded shank 1 2 of the adjustable aw( The nut'lef is provided with la circumferential groove 16 which is adaptedy to receive a securing pin or screw 17 which engages in the groove and thereby prevents longitudinal movement of the adjusting nut.
ln assembling my wrench, the threaded shank is rst inserted through the adjusting nut lt and the latter is then placed in its seat, it being understood that theremovable rib 5 is not at this time applied, although the fixed rib 9 is positioned in the groove 7. After the lshank 12 has been engaged with the threads of the nut 14C and the adjustable jaw has been lowered to a suitable position, the rib 5 is placed in groove 8 and pressed into the mortise 11 and is thereafter retained in place by the tight tit of thesedovetailed parts. The pin 17 may be inserted at any desired stage of the assembling. It will be understood that the nut 14 projects slightly beyond the sides of the body lso that it may be readily turned for longitudinally moving the adjustable jaw toward or away from the Vupper jaw member and that the stress applied to turning the nut which is gripped between the jaws of the wrench is transmitted directly to the body through the shank 12 and nut 14 to the shoulders and side walls of the transverse recess.
I claim 1, A wrench comprising a body having upwardly urojerting side walls terminating in a fixed jaw member, said walls having a longitudinal groove formed therein, an adjustable jaw having a removable and a fixed rib slidable in said grooves, a
threaded shank extending from said adjustable jaw and adapted to be housed within a cylindrical bore formed in said body, a transverse recess formed through said body,
lmrsxw'r orner-ce.
a nut itting'said recess and engaging said threaded shank, and means for preventing longitudinal movement but permitting rotation of said nut. v Y Y 2. A Wrench comprising a body having side Walls With longitudinal grooves formed therein, said side Walls terminating in a lined jaw member, an adjustable jaw, anintegral rib on one side of. saidvadjustable jaw for engaging one or" said grooves, a tenon removably mounted in the other side or"l said adjustable javv 'for engaging the other of said grooves, and means for 'mov-V recess formed in said body, a grooved nut mounted in said recess and sustained in positonby the shoulders thereof, a threaduedt shank extending from said adjustable jaWl` and engaging said nut, and means positioned in said. groove `for maintaining the nut in Contact with said shoulders.
43A Wrench comprising a body having side Walls formed with longitudinal grooves throughout their exposed length, said sideV Wailsterminating in a4 fixed jan7 member, an 'adjustable jaw, an integral rib on said adjustable jaw for engaging one of said grooves, a; tenon ren'lovablyV mounted in the adjustable jaiv orfengagng'the other oil said grooves, and means for moving said adjustable jaw toward or 'away trom said fixed member. Y
Y In testimony whereof' have hereunto set my hand 1n presence of VtWo subscribing Witnesses. j
