L. w. NEIDHARDT. INTERCHANGEABLE PROTECTOR PLATE FOR OVENS. 7
APPLICATION FILED JULY 9,- I919.
1,359,096, Patented Nov. 16, 1920.
LO'UI WEISS NEIDHARDT, 0F JEFFERSONVILLE, INDIANA.
INTERCHANGEAIBLE PROTECTOR-PLATE FOR OVENS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 16, 1920.
Application filed July 9, 1919. Serial No. 309,703.
To all whom it may concern Be 1tknown that I, LOUI WV. NEIDHARDT, a citizen or" the United States, stationed at Jeffersonvllle, Ind, have invented an Improvement in Interchangeable Protector- Plates for Ovens of which the fOllOWlIlO' 1s a specification.
The invention described herein may be used by the Government, or any of its oflicers or employees in prosecution of work for the Government, or by any other person in the United States, without payment of any royalty thereon.
The objects of my invention are to provide a protector plate for ovens of field ranges which can be readily attached to the same in order to protect them from burning out, at the place where this is most likely to occur, thus insuring increased life for the ranges, and more even distribution of the heat, and to provide such an attachment that will be cheap to manufacture and of such dimensions that it will be interchangeable for any type of oven.
lly invention consists in the peculiar construction hereinafter fully set forth and pointed out in the claim.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention as applied to an oven of a specific type.
Fig. 2 is an elevation of my invention.
Fig. 3 is a bottom view of same.
The attachment, hereinafter called a protector, is made from one piece of #12 U. S. gage iron, soft steel or other suitable material by simple stamping operations. It consists of the main plate 1, bent to an angle of about 90 and having the large flanges 2, and the corresponding small flanges, 3.
The particular oven shown in Fig. 1 has its sides 4, extended beyond the parapet bottom, thereby forming a chamber through which the hot gases lrom the fire may pass. The extensions of these sides 4, of the oven fit between the large and small flanges 2 and 3 mentioned above.
In order to support the bottom 6, of the range and strengthen the side plate-extensions the braces 5 are used and corresponding openings are made in main plate 1 so as to prevent interference. The channels or angles 10 attached to the bottom 6 also act to strengthen the construction.
To apply my invention to the particular type of ranges shown, place the range bot.- tom up, and remove bolts 7 and separators 9 from the oven protector; then place the protector on the rear end of the range so that the large flange 2 will be in a downward position as in Fig. 1, being sure that the protector lies flat on the flanges or angles 11 of the side plates 4. If holes are not punched in the sides 4 of the range, locate and punch the holes so that the bolts 7 may be inserted. Raise the protector sufliciently to insert the bolts 7 and separators 9 so that the nuts 8 will be on outside of range and tighten the nuts so as to secure the protector in place.
The heat of the tire, as communicated to the oven either directly or by the circulation of the heated air and gases, contacts first with the attachment and must pass across it and a small air space before reaching the thin bottom sheet of the oven. In this way this attachment protects the thin bottom sheets of the range from burning out rapidly, can be readily attached by means of two bolts, and in case the protector burns out it can be readily replaced, whereas it is impracticable to make repairs on the thin bottom sheets of the range.
The dimensions of this protector can of course be varied to make it applicable to any type of field range. I
Having thus described my invention I claim A protector for ovens of field ranges, comprising a plate of sheet metal bent at right angles, flanges formed on the ends of each angularly disposed portion, the respective flanges spaced apart to receive the side plates of a range and apertured and fastening means insertible through the apertures for detachably fastening the protector to a range.
LOUI WEISS NEIDHARDT.
