HAUSER, OF UTICA, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO U'IICA PRODUCTS, INC, UTIGA, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK SHEET METAL CASING This invention relates to sheet metal casings and pertains more especially to a casing for enclosing furnaces, boilers and the like.
An object of this invention is a furnace casing having flat sides and a rectangular top provided with improved means for attaching together the sides and the top so that the casing may be quickly, inexpensively and easily assembled around a furnace without the use of any special tools and even though there be but small space around the furnace in which to work.
A furnace casing embodying the invention comprises rectangular front and back plates having their upper and side edges bent inwardly and provided with grooves along said edges, together with side plates having similar upper edges, the vertical edges of the side plates being received within the vertical grooves of the front and back plates. A twopiece top plate has its edges received in the top edge grooves of the front, back and side plates and the meeting edges of the two top pieces are formed with co-acting semi-spherical recesses to provide an aperture through which may extend the flue of the furnace. At each upper corner there is provided a substantially pyramidal member which is held in place by a bolt passing through a lug carried by the adjacent side plate. The casing above described may be easily and quickly assembled simply by introducing the edges of the side plates into the grooves provided on the front and back plates and the edges of the top plate into the grooves provided for that purpose along the upper inturned edges of the front, back andside plates, after which the corner pieces are bolted in place and serve to lock the various plates in their assembled relationship. The front and back plates may be formed in two sections having a tongue and groove connection which permits slight adjustment of the sections toward and away from each other. The casing thus is adjustable both as to width and depth to compensate for variations in boiler sizes and all the joints are tight and rattle proof. The front panel of the casing is easi 1y removable to facilitate repairs to the boiler or furnace which it encloses.
Other objects, novel features and advantages of this invention will be apparent from the following specification and accompanying drawings, wherein:

The casing 10 is made up of vertical rectangular front and back plates 11 and 12-, respectively, and a pair of side plates 13 together with a top composed of plates 14 and 15. The top and vertical edges of the front and back plates 11 and 12 are turned inwardly and are doubled back as at 11a and 110 to strengthen the same. The upper edges of the side plates 13 are also bent inwardly and are similarly doubled back at 13a. Strips of metal 11?) and 12?; are welded to the under faces of the inturned edges of the plates 11 and 12 and are provided with offset portions or lips which form horizontal grooves with the doubled back portion of these plates. The inturned vertical edges of the plates 11 and 12 are provided with corresponding strips 11d and 1261 which form vertical grooves with the doubled-back edges of the plates. The side plates 13 are provided with similar strips 13?). One of the top plates, in this instance, the plate 15, is provided with a strip 15?) which forms a groove with the edge of the plate. The plates 14 and 15 are provided with semi-circular opposed recesses 16 and 17, the strip 15b being correspondingly recessed.

Likewise the se'ctions of the rear plate are provided with an offset edge 12c and a welded strip 12/.
Each of the front and back plates is cut away at its upper corner, such cut-out being necessary to permit the turning in of the top and side edgw. Each upper corner of the side plates is also slightly cut away to permit the upper edges to extend between the inturned edges of the front and back plates. This leaves an open space at each corner, which is covered b a pyramidal-shaped corner member 18. Eihch corner member is held in place by a bolt 19 which is threaded into a lug carried by the adjacent side plate 13.
In assembling the casing around the furnace or boiler, the top plates 14 and 15 may be arranged with the boiler flue located in the recesses 16 and 17 and the edge of the plate 14 received in the roove formed by the lip g the plate 15. he back plate 12 may now be arranged with the back edges of the plates 14 and 15 received in the groove formed by the lip 12b and the edge of the plate. Next the side plates 13 may be arranged with their edges received in the grooves formed by the lips 12d and the inturned vertical edges of the plate 12 and the side edges of the plates 14 and 15 received in the grooves formed by the lips 13b and the edges of the side plates. The two back corner members 18 may now be placed in position and the bolts 19 threaded into lugs 20. It is not essential thatthese corner members be put on at this time, although it probably is better to do so. 7
The assembly of the casing is now completed by arranging the front plate 11 with the vertical edges of the side plates 13 received in the grooves formed by the lips 11d and the vertical edges of the front plate and with the front edges of the plates 14 and 15 received in the groove formed by the lip 111) with the top edge of the front plate. The front corner members 18 are next placed in position and the corresponding bolts 19 threaded into lugs 20. The bolts 19 are now tightened up all around to bring the various plates into snug contact with each other.
The depth of the various grooves is sufficient to compensate for slight variations in the size of boiler casings with which it is intended to be used. Where the boiler is slightly oversized the edges of the various parts will not extend the full depth of the grooves, but in any event, the plates will be firmly held in assembled relationship by the curved members. With this arrangement a two direction adjustment of the casing is provided vided with grooves, the vertical edges 0 The sections of the front and back lates are movable slightly toward and away f rom each other while the front and back plates are also movable slightly toward and away from each other, thus permitting slight adjustment both as to depth and width of the casing. With this type of structure, the front plate may easiiy be removed to permit access to the boiler. t is necessary only to remove the front corner members 18 and withdraw the front plate.
It is of course understood that various mod-- ifications may be made in the structure above described, without in any way departing from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A casing comprising front, back and side vertical plates and a top plate, said vertical plates having tongue and groove connection with each other and with the top plate, said connections permitting slight variation of the distance between saidplates, a corner member fitting over each top corner, and means for attaching each corner member to one of said plates.
2. A casing comprising front, back and side vertical plates, a top plate, said vertical plates having tongue and groove connection with each other and with the top plate, said front and back plates being formed of two sections having tongue and groove connections, said connections permitting variation of the distance between the opposite plates, a corner member fitting over each top corner, and means for attaching each corner member to one of said plates.
3. A casing comprising front and back vertical plates of variable width, vertical side plates and a top plate, said vertical plates having tongue and groove connection with each other and with the top plate, said connections permitting slight variation of the distance between the opposite plates, a corner member fitting over each top corner, and means for attaching each corner member to one of the vertical plates.
4. A casing comprising sectional front and back plates of variable width and having their upper and side edges bent inwardly and .provided with grooves, side plates having their upper edges bent inwardly and rothe side plates being received Within the vertical grooves of the front and back plates, a top plate having its edges received in the horizontal grooves at the top edges of the front, back and side plates, a corner member fitting over each top corner, and means for attaching each corner member to one of said plates.
5. A casing comprising front and back plates having their upper and side edges bent inwardly and provided with lips forming grooves with said edges, side plates having their upper edges bent inwardly and pro- 1 vided with lips forming grooves with said edges, the vertical edges of the side plates being received within the vertical grooves of the front and back plates, a top plate having its edges received in the horizontal grooves at the top edges of the front, back and side plates, a substantially pyramidal corner member fitting over each top corner, and means for attaching each corner member to one of the vertical plates.
6. A casing comprising front and back plates having their upper and side edges bent inwardly, lips carried by said edges and forming horizontal and vertical grooves therewith, side plates having their upper edges bent inwardly, lips carried by said edges and forming horizontal grooves therewith, the vertical edges of the side plates being received within the vertical grooves of the front and back plates, a two-piece top plate having its edges received in the horizontal grooves at the top edges of the front, back and side plates, said piece having recesses along their meeting edges to provide an aperture, a substantially pyramidal corner member fitting over each top corner, and means for attaching each corner member to one of the vertical plates.
7. A casing comprising front and back plates having their upper and side edges bent inwardly, lips carried by said edges and forming horizontal and vertical grooves therewith, side plates having their upper edges bent inwardly, lips carried by said edges and forming horizontal grooves therewith, the vertical edges of the side plates being received within the vertical grooves of the front and back plates, a two-piece top plate having its edges received in the horizontal grooves at the top edges of the front, back and side plates, said piece having recesses along their meeting edges to provide an aperture, a lip carried by one of said pieces and forming a groove with the edge thereof within which is received the edge of the other piece, a substantially pyramidal corner member fitting over each top corner, and means for attach ing each corner member to one of the vertical plates.
8. A casing comprising front and back plates having their upper and side edges bent inwardly and provided with grooves, side plates having their upper edges bent inwardly and provided with grooves, the vertical edges of the side plates being received within the vertical grooves of the front and back plates, a top plate having its edges received in the horizontal grooves at the top edges of the front, back and side plates, a substantially pyramidal corner member fitting over each top corner, andmeans for attaching each corner member to one of the vertical plates.
9. A casing comprising front and back plates having their upper and side edges bent inwardly and provided with grooves, side plates having their upper edges bent inwardly and provided with grooves, the vertical edges of the side plates being received within the vertical grooves of the front and back plates, a top plate having its edges received in the horizontal grooves at the top edges of the front,-back and side plates, a substantially pyramidal corner member fitting over each top corner, a lug fastened to each upper corner of each side plate, and means for attaching each corner member to the corresponding lug.
10. A casing comprising a pair of plates each having one end and two side edges bent inwardly and provided with grooves along said edges, a second pair of plates having their end edges bent inwardly and provided with grooves along said edges, the side edges of the second pair of plates being received within the side edge grooves of the first pair of plates, an end plate having its edges received in the end edge grooves of both pairs of plates, a substantially pyramidal corner member fitting over each corner of said end plate, and means for attaching each corner member of one of the remaining plates.
11. A casing comprising a pair of plates each having one end and two side edges bent inwardly and provided with grooves along said edges, a second pair of plates having their end edges bent inwardly and rovided with grooves along said edges, the slde edges of the second pair of plates being received within the side edge grooves of the first pair of plates, an end plate having its edges received in the end-edge grooves of both pairs of plates, a substantially pyramidal corner member fitting over each corner of said end plate, a lug fastened to each of two corners of the plates of one pair, and means for attaching each corner member to the corresponding 12.
