To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN M. FEENEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, county of Fairfield, State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Flagpole-Brackets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to brackets or holders for supporting flag poles or the like in an outwardly projecting position from the windows of buildings or froinother simila structures.
T he invention has for its object to provide a simple and efficient device of this character of inexpensive construction which may be readily attached to a window frame or other structure in any desired position and as readily removed therefrom, whose attaching means are such as not seriously to damage or deface the part to which the device is attached, and which when in position will rigidly and firmly support the flag or other pole, retaining the same against all possibility of accidental disengagement or change in position. 7
The foregoing and other objects of the invention, together with means whereby the same may be carried into effect, will best be understood from the following description of certain forms or embodiments thereof illustrated in the accompanying drawings. It will be understood, however, that the particular constructions described and shown have been chosen for illustrative purposes merely and that the invention, as defined by the claims hereunto appended, may be otherwise practised without departing from the spirit and scope thereof.
In said drawings:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a window casing, showing a flag pole supported therefrom by a device constructed in accordance with the invention;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of the bracket or holder shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a front elevation of a modified form of bracket or holder.
Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of the device shown in Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a horizontal section of a window frame or casing having secured thereto a bracket or holder of the form shown in Figs. 3 and 4 for the purpose of supporting a flag pole therefrom.
Referring first to Fig. 1, 1O denotes a window frame or casing having the usual vertical guide strips 11 forming between them guide grooves in which the sliding sashes 12 are mounted for vertical movement. 13 denotes a flag or other pole supported from the window frame 10, so as to project outwardly therefrom in'a substantialiy horizontal position or at a slight upward inclination, by means of abracket 1 1 constructed in accordance with the invention.
As shown more clearly in Fig, 2, the bracket or holder 14: comprises a substantially U-shaped body member 15 preferably composed of sheet metal bent-into the re quired form, said body member comprising two substantially parallel arms 16 connected at their outer ends by a bridge portion 17, said arms 16 being formed respectively with alined openings 18 to receive the flag pole 18, and being connected by a bolt. 19 having a head 20 engaging one of the arms 16 and a threaded end provided with a wing nut 21 engaging the other of saidarms;
The arms 16 are adapted to embrace and engage at opposite sides, respectively, one of the guide strips 11 of the window frame,
and are preferably provided at their free inner ends with suitable means for insuring the secure engagement of said arms with said guide, such means as herein shown comprising inwardly projecting prongs 22 formed by striking up the metal of said arms.
For securing the flag pole 13 in position in the alined openings 18, there is provided an eye-bolt comprising a ring-like .head 23 disposed substantially in alinement with the openings 18, and through which the. flag pole 13 passes between said openings, and a threaded shank 24 passing through a suitably disposed opening in the bridge portion 17 and provided with a wing nut 25 engaging said bridge portion.
It will now be seen that by proper manipulation of the wing nut 21, the device may be readily applied to any desired portion of the sash guide 11 of a window frame and securely clamped in position thereon, and that by proper manipulation ofthe wing nut 25 a flag pole 13 may be securely retained against accidental displacement in the alined openings 18 and thereby rigidly supported in the desired position from the sash guide 11.
The bracket or holder above described is especially suitable for supporting relatively further provided with frame engaging prongs 220. Instead of the single clamping bolt 19, shown in Fig. 2, the arms 160 of the device shown in Figs. 3 and 5 are connected by two clamping bolts 190 and 191 provided respectively with wing nuts 210 and 211,
the bolt 190 being similar to the; bolt 19, and the bolt 191 being of a sufficiently greater length to pass also through an elongated brace member? or bar 26, and thereby clamp the same to the adjacent arm 160. The brace member 26 preferably comprises a strip of wood of a sufiicient length and width to fit between the sash guide grooves 27 of the window frame 100, as clearly shown in Fig. 5, thereby bracing and supporting the bracket or holder against eccentric strains due to the weight of the projecting pole 130 or the flapping of the flag 28 in the wind. The brace bar 26 is preferably of sufficient thickness to be engaged by the inner end of the pole .130, and may be formedwith a socket or recess 29 to receive said end, thereby further bracing and add-- ingr rigidity to the entire structure.
rom the foregoing, it will be seen that the invention provides a device of simple and inexpensive construction for holding or supporting a flag or other staff or pole in the desired position, which device may be easily and quickly attached to or detached from a window frame or other structure without the use of tools, whose attachment to the window frame or other structure does not necessitate permanent marring of the latter by holes for screws or other fa'stening means, which may, with equal facility, be attached to the window frame at any convenient elevation, and which, when" 7 in position, will securely support the pole or staff in the desired manner without possibility of accidental displacement.
The sash guide engaging prongs 22 or 220 may and preferably will be of insufficient than shown in the drawings so as to pro- 7 vide, in efieot, roughened engaging surfaces on the inner faces of the clamping arms which will be sufiicient to prevent accidental slipping of said arms on the sash guide when clamped in position thereon.
Having thus described my invention, I claim: p
1. A device of the character described comprising a substantially U-shaped bracket having a pair of substantially parallel clamping arms and a bridge portion connecting said arms, said arms being provided with alined openings adapted to receive a pole or staff, a bolt cooperating with said arms to clamp the same upon a sup porting structure, an eye-bolt having a ringlike head adapted to receive said pole or staff and a threaded stem extending through said bridge portion, and a nut on said threaded stem.
2. A device of the character described comprising a bracket provided with an eye bolt to receive a pole or staff and with means for clamping the same to the sash guide at one slde of a window frame, and a brace bar secured to said bracket and adapted to engage at itslend the sash posite side of said frame.
8. A device of the character described comprising a substantially Ushaped bracket having a pair of substantially parallel clamping arms and provided with means for supporting a pole or staff, a brace bar' having a recess to receive the end of said pole or staff and a plurality of bolts cooperating-with said arms to clamp the same to the sash guide of a window frame, one of said'bolts serving also to secure said brace bar to one of said arms.
4. A device of the character described comprising a bracket having a pair of substantially parallel clamping arms provided with alined openings adapted to receive a pole or staff, a brace bar having a recess to receive the end of said pole or staff, and a bolt cooperating with said arms to clamp the same upon a supporting structure, said bolt serving also to secure said brace bar to guide at the opone of said arms.
