'WINDOW-GLASS cLir.
Application filed August 1, 1927'. Serial No. 209,773.
This invention relates to a window glass clip adapted to be applied to metal window frames for the purpose of holding glass panes therein. It is an object and purpose of the present invention to provide a simple yet effective glass holding clip of this character which may be used to hold panes of glass of varying thickness in a window frame and which may be quickly and easily released whenever it desired to remove or replace the glass.
An understanding of the invention may be had from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which,
Fig. l is a fragmentary elevation of a metal TindovY frame having a pane of glass held therein by the glass securing clip of my invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged horizontal section on the plane of line 2 2 of Fig. l.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the construction shown in Fig. 2 showing a pane of glass, relatively thin, held in place by the clip.
Fig. Il is a similar view illustrating the saine clip holding a thicker pane of glass in place, and n Fig. 5 is a perspective .view or the glass holding clip of my invention.
Lilie reference characters refer to llike parts in the different figures of the drawing. The window frame is of metal land comprises upper and lower rails l preferably of angle iron, spaced apart, and connected at their ends by vertical ends also of angle iron having legs 2 and 3 located at right angles to each other. The frame may be divided by a plurality of vertical bars, 'iF-shape in cross section, having flanges e and 5, as shown7 the flanges 5 forming the top of the 'i' and lying in the same plane with the legs 3 of the end members of the frame.
A pane of glass 6 of the proper. size is placed in the frame so as to bear against the flanges el and 5 and similar upwardly and downwardly extending legs on the upper and lower members l of the frame. Headed pins 7 are secured to the legs or flanges 2 and l and those which are attached to the legs 2 have short shanls permanently riveted or otherwise secured to said legs so that the heads 7 lie inwardly a short distance lrom the innei sides of the legs 2 of the end members of the frame. Each shank 8 which passes through the flanges l of the T-member at each end is equipped with a head 7 and the shank is of such a length that the heads are likewise located a slight distance to each side of the flange Lil, as best shown in Fig. 2.
Clips made of' sheet metal are adapted to be used in connection with the heads 7 and Shanks 8. Each of these clips is of angle forni, the legs 9 and 10 of which are located at right angles to each other. rllie legs 9 are designed to come against the glass while the legs l() lie alongside the flanges 2 and l, previously described. ln each of the legs 10 an opening ll is made large enough that a head i' may pass freely therethrough. From this opening a curved slot l2, of the form best shown in Figs. 3, d and extends outwardly and away from the opening so that when the clip is applied to a headed pin it may be moved on the shank of the pin, which transverses the slot l2, and in this way a wedging cam action is provided to force the pane of glass 6 snugly against thebac-king provided oy the window frame. it is evident that the glass may vary considerably in thickness, as shown in Figs. 3 and e', without in any way aliecting the clamping action which is produced and which securely holds the panes of glass in place.
rEhe clips are easily applied and may be quite as easily removed. :lt is desirable at tin e to remove the glass and place, in its stead, screens which are bound at their edges by suitable :traine members. Or if the glass should become broken a new pane may be very easily put in as a replacement. The construction is very simple yet effective and has proved very practical for the purpose for which it is designed. The invention is defined in the appended claims and is to be considered comprehensive of all forms of structure coming within their scope.
I claim:
l. In combination, an open window frame formed of members having flanges lying at right angles to each other, a pane of glass or the lilre located in said frame against certain of said flanges, headed pins mounted on other of said flanges which project outwardly from the flanges against which the glass bears, and a clip mounted on each pin having a curved slot therein whereby movement of the clip on the pin forces the clip against the glass and secures it in the frame.
2. A securing clip for window frames comprising, a body having a clamping edge,
said body having a substantially circular hole therethrough and an inclined slot extending from said hole tangentially from its circumference nearest said clamping edge and 6 thence inclined away from said clamping edge.
3. A securing clip for window frames com- Leeee prising, a body having a substantially round hole therethrough and a slot extending from said hole tangentially from its circumference 10 nearest said clamping edge and curved away iii'oin said clamping edge.
In testimony whereof I afIiX my signature.
