ROAD SIGN.
Application filed September 10, 1925. seriai No. 55,525. Y
My invention to anew article of manufacture comprising a road sign construction wherein a tubular postfiattened and split atits upper end into diverging upwardly 5 facing channels operates in conjunction with a sheet metal sign to form a substantial road sign.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a new and improved coning a sheet metal sign in such a manner that the same may be changed or renewed.
I accomplish these and other objects by means of the structure disclosed in the drawings forming a part of the present sp'ecifica tion wherein like characters of reference are used to designate similar parts throughout the said specification and drawings, and in which I Fig. 1 is a broken front elevation of my improved road sign;
Fig. 2 is a side edge view thereof; and
Fig. 3 is a broken elevation of a modified form of the invention. Referring to the drawings the numeral 1 is used to designate in general a tubular post flattened at the top or upper end thereof and then split centrally and longitudinally to form lateral or diverging arms comprising upwardly facing channels 3.
The channels 3 are provided with apertures ad acent their outer ends to receive detachable securing elements, such as a bolt 4 or the like, the purpose of which will hereinafter be more fully set forth.
In the preferred form of the structure the channel arms 3 are arranged or diverged substantially at right angles to each other in order to engage adjacent lower edges of a substantially square sheet metal sign 6, as disclosed in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings.
The sheet metal sign 6 is provided with apertures which register with the apertures inthe channels or arms 3 through which bolts 4, or other suitable detachable securing means, may be inserted to retain the lower edge or edges of the sign 6 securely in engaging relation with the channels 3.
By means of this novel arrangement and structure the channel arms 3 are integral extensions or arms which embrace the sheet metal sign along two adjacent edges thereof, and by reason of the diverging nature of said arms or channels 3 an additional and rigid support is given to the sheet metal sign 6 which will tend to prevent bending thereof throughout the greater portion of its body, and in a manner which will not detract from the neat and ornamental appearance of the entire road sign.
I prefer to use bolts or other suitable detachable securing means rather than rivets to rigidly secure the sheet metal sign 6 in engaging relation with the channels 3 in order' that the sign may be changed with the use ofproper tools and a different sign of the same shape may be easily and readily in stalled in place of the old sign.
In Fig; 3 of the drawings I have illustrated a modified form of the invention wherein the channels or arms 3 areextended in alignment in opposite directions thereby forming a channel arranged to en age the lower horizontal edge of a rectangular sheet metal sign 6 in much thesame manner'as hereinbefore described.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. In an article of manufacture, a road sign comprising a tubular post flattened and split at its upper end to form arms, said arms being spread apart at substantially right angles to form channels arranged to engage the edges of a rectangular sheet metal sign; and a sheet metal sign mounted with one corner thereof engaged within-said channels.
2. In an article of manufacture, a road sign comprising a tubular post flattened and split at its upper end to form arms, said arms being spread apart to form diverging upwardly faced channels arranged to engage a corner of a sheet metal sign; and a sheet metal sign mounted with a corner thereof engaged within said channels; and securing means for retaining engaging relation between said channels a'nd sign.
3. In an article of manufacture, a road sign comprising a tubular post flattened and split at its upper end to form arms, said arms lateral apertures adjacent the ends of said channels; a sheet metal sign having adjacent lower edges seated Within the diverging channels of said post and provided With apertures registering with the apertures in the channels; and detachable securing means passing through the registering apertures t0 0 secure said sheet metal sign Within said channels.
In Witness whereoi I hereunto set my signature. I
DEWVEY COFFIN.
