I XI /5 K Berven GRO UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
KNUTE IBERVEN, OF PORTLAND, OREGON.
SHADE AND CURTAIN FIXTURE.
1 adapted to be readily attached to or detached from the window casing without the use of nails, screws or other customary fastemngs.
The object of my invention is to improvethe construction and increase the efiiciency of devices of the above described character.
Vith this and other objects in view my invention will be more fully described, illustrated in the drawings which show a preferred embodiment thereof and then specifically pointed out in the claims which are attached to and form a part of this application.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my device attached to a window casing. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a top plan view. Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view with parts in elevation. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective of one of the clamping blocks, and Fig. 6 is a detail perspective of one of the shade holders detached from the rest of the device.
Referring more specifically to the drawings, in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout, my improved device will be seen to consist primarily of two parts, namely the supporting frame which in use, is adapted to be clamped to the window casing and the shade and curtain holders proper which are clamped and carried by said frame. This frame consists of a rod 1, preferably of metal and having secured upon one end a clamping block 2, which as shown consists of two parts, an outer member 3 and an inner member 4, both substantially rectangular in shape, the inner member extending beyond the end of the outer member and terminating in an inbent edge portion 5. This clamping block is preferably constructed of spring steel for a reason Specification of Letters Patent.

is supplied, said second member being slidably mounted upon the rod 1 which is passed through the sleeve thereof. The free end of the rod 1 is screw threaded as at 7 and provided with a wing nut 8 which bears against the end of the sleeve 6.
In operation the rod 1 is positioned transversely across the window casing at the required height, the extending ends of the clamping blocks are positioned to bear against the outer edges of the side frames 9 of the window casing and the wing nut 8 is tightened thus firmly clamping the supporting frame to the window casing. Slidably mounted upon this rod and adapted to be adjustably secured thereto by means of the wing headed bolts 10 are the curtain and shade supporting members which as a whole are designated by the numerals 11 and 12.
The holder 11 as best shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings consists of a member 13 formed from a single piece of sheet metal, the body portion 14: of which is substantially rectangular in shape and provided at its forward end with a suitable aperture 15 adapted to receive the spindle end of the customary shade roller, and provided at its lower rear end with a rearwardly extending por tion 16 the purpose of which will be hereinafter explained. The upper portion of this member is bent at right angles to form a. lateral extension 17 which is provided at its rear end with a terminal tongue 18 which extends rearwardly and is then bent upwardly and forwardly as at 19 to form a loop by means of. which it is slidably mounted upon the rod as shown. The free end of this tongue is provided with a perforation 20 which is in alinement with a similar perforation 21 formed in the lateral extension 17. As shown this shade holder is secured in place upon the rod by means of a wing headed bolt 10 which is passed downwardly through the apertures 20 and 21 and through a loop 22 of a curtain supporting member 23 and is engaged by a nut 24:. As will be readily seen the tightening of this bolt will not only clamp the shade holder to the rod but will also secure the curtain holder 23 in place. The curtain holder is formed from a single piece of stiff wire, one end of which is bent to form the loop 22 previously mentioned while the other end is bent upwardly at right angles to the plane of the loop to form an engaging hook for supporting the curtain pole or rod.
The holder 12 is identical in construction with the holder 11 except that the forward portion of the body portion 1a is provided with a slot 26 adapted to engage the squared pin of the shade roller and hold the same against rotation.
This device possesses numerous advantages over those now on the market, one of which is the forming of the clamping members of spring metal whereby a much closer engagement with the window casing may be obtained without marring the same.
By referring to Fig. l of the drawings it will be seen that the shade holding members are so mounted upon the rod that the curtain holding hooks are upon the outside of the body members thereof, and therefore braced by the shade holding members against inward swinging while as will be readily understood, the shade holding members themselves are prevented from swinging inwardly by the shade roller. By this construction the shade holders and the curtain hooks are made to brace each other. In use the rearward extensions 16 bear against the window casing and prevent the holders from turning on the rod.
What I claim is 1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a rod adapted to be secured to a window, of a holder comprising a body member having means for engaging a shade roller, and having a lateral extension on its upper edge, said extension terminating in a tongue which extends rearwardly upwardly and then forwardly to form a loop for the reception of said rod, said body member having a rearward extension adapted to bear against said window and prevent turning of the holder upon said rod, and a bolt passed through the free end of said tongue and said lateral extension whereby to clamp said holder to said rod.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a rod adapted to be clamped to a window casing, of a combined curtain and shade supporting holder clamped thereto, said holder comprising a body member having means for engaging a shade roller and having a lateral extension upon its upper edge, said extension terminating in a tongue which extends rearwardly upwardly and then forwardly to form a loop through which the rod is passed, a curtain holder formed of wire one end of which is bent to form a hook, the other end of which is bent to form a loop at right angles to the hook, a bolt passed through the free end of the tongue lateral extension and loop of the curtain holder and a nut engaging over said. bolt whereby the shade holder and curtain holder are clamped to each other and. to the rod.
In. testimony whereof, I atlix my signa ture, in presence of two witnesses.
